Otta's take

Sam Franklin headshot

Sam Franklin

CEO of Otta

There are many different charging point companies out there and each requires a separate app, card, account, etc. It's a difficult and confusing landscape. This is the issue Bonnet wants to tackle - a network of all EV charge points that drivers can access through one application.

The business provides benefits for multiple parties: drivers looking for access to all charging points through a single monthly subscription, businesses thinking of electrifying their fleet, and owners of charging infrastructure wanting to increase the visibility.

With similar apps already on the market, Bonnet hopes to provide one that unifies all the features that drivers need, and has concentrated funds on expanding the platform's chargepoint offering and partnerships with network operators. Fresh funding will be used to accelerate growth off the back of strong traction throughout 2022, with Bonnet now boasting over 200,000 chargers on its network.

Diversity & Inclusion at Bonnet

Eltje Lange headshot

Eltje Lange (VP People)

  • Building a diverse and inclusive team is at the heart of everything we do both in the people team, and the wider Bonnet team. We are aware that diversity & inclusion efforts are ongoing, and that we will never have it all figured out and ‘done’. This means we need to constantly learn and iterate. We will also make mistakes, but the important thing is that we learn from them and act with positive intent.
  • 12 weeks fully paid parental leave, regardless of gender. Additional 14 weeks maternity leave on 50%.
  • We extended our bereavement policy to include pregnancy and child loss for both parents, with no questions asked and 2 weeks of paid leave.
  • Actively track and working to improve gender balance (currently 42% female) and gender pay gap.
  • We built points around Neurodiversity and care responsibilities into our management training.

Over the last 12 months, we have more than doubled the amount of chargers we have on the network, and launched some key European markets. We've also grown our team by 25% over the last 12 months, whilst being very intention when we hire.

Challenging work

Bonnet is at the forefront of EV adoption and the electrification of transport. It's amazing to be and it's amazing to be a part of it. Sustainability is a focal point of everything that we do and decisions that we make and we genuinely believe that we could make a huge difference in the world. Personally, I spent many years in the oil and gas industry, so I'm pleased to try and counter-act all the past carbon I've contributed to!

I work 2 days in office and 3 days at home per week, but if a different home/office split works better for me, Bonnet is happy to accommodate that. We have some employees who work fully remote in the UK and abroad. The days I come in are up to me and if something comes up I have ample flexibility and freedom to change my in-office days. My workday typically begins at 9am but I am free to start and end work as suits me, roughly between 8am and 10am (so long as I attend all my meetings and work a full 8 hours!)

Flexible working

Feb 2023

In my first few weeks working at Bonnet, I was going through the process of getting a diagnosis for ADHD, as I was really struggling with my concentration and focus. I asked my manager and HR if they would mind pushing back my start date by a month or so while I waited for my medication following my diagnosis, but instead they put me on 4 weeks of fully paid leave and insisted I focus on myself and return when I feel capable. When I returned the focus was entirely on accommodating me with my ADHD. We also have compassionate leave, 31 days of holiday and private health cover.

Focus on employee wellbeing

Feb 2023

We have daily stand-ups (except Fridays) with the whole development team where we each briefly go over what are working on, discuss any issues/challenges we are facing and plan our tasks ahead. My team also meets weekly to discuss optimisations we can make, and I have a one-to-one session with my manager every two weeks to discuss how I am working/developing. Additionally, all doors are always open for a conversation with anyone across the company.
