We are living in a climate emergency. According to the UN, any pathway that avoids disastrous climate consequences of a world 1.5 degrees warmer requires not only reducing carbon emissions, but also actively removing billions of tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Heirloom is working on one such technology that may enable us to meet this gargantuan task, carbon mineralisation. Heirloom uses the world’s second most abundant material, limestone to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere, and then permanently and safely stores that CO2 so that it doesn't return back to the air.
Crucially, because its primary feedstock is a widely available mineral that uses a chemical reaction to capture carbon, the result is in principle a relatively low-capex, low-opex process that can verifiably extract carbon from the atmosphere while minimizing the land and energy required.
The biggest challenge for Heirloom will be developing its technology to prove that it can be more efficient and work at lower cost. Until then, it will not be able to compete on price with nature-based offset projects.
