Otta's take

Theo Margolius

COO of Otta

If there is any consequence of the growing influence of technology in our lives, it's the vastly increased accessibility to information. Organizing and streamlining this abundance of content without relying on advertising bombardment and while maintaining a digital community has been a challenge.

Medium offers a publishing platform for small and large writers alike, with the New York Times and Atlantic magazines making regular contributions. This platform allows writers to create customized pages to provide anything from blogs to instructional content, newsletters and official publications. Its 100 million+ monthly readers benefit from the ad-free content sustained through the Medium Partner program.

While the quality internet content market continues to expand, Medium has struggled in recent years. A change in strategy and organisational culture leading to 50% of staff leaving in 2021 and multiple rapid experiments in revenue sharing failing to stem the growth of competitors such as Substack. With founder Ev Williams stepping down as CEO in 2022 investors have expressed fears about the future of the platform, but a change in leadership is likely to bring fresh ideas and a new direction for the company going forward.
