Otta's take

Xav Kearney headshot

Xav Kearney

CTO of Otta

Over the last decade, engineering infrastructure across virtually every company area has become more advanced: Payments, communications, data, and so forth. What used to take teams in high-growth companies entire quarters to accomplish now takes individual engineers a few days.

Plain is an API-first platform built to bring this change to customer service by giving product and engineering teams at every scale everything they need to build great customer service. With founders who have seen the impact this has at companies like Deliveroo and Lyst, their experience plays a key role in the teams decision to focus on the customer service function.

There are a lot of tools to compete with in the customer support space, including successful services like Intercom and Zendesk. Plain are going to need to build a stand-out product to win, but they have the team and backing to make it happen.

Company values

  • Intentionally, proudly small: we believe small teams are more efficient, impactful and fun to work in than large teams. We have to consider how every technical, product and process decision affects our ability to stay small.
  • Work hard for simplicity: customer service is messy, complex and unpredictable. Our job is turn that messyness and complexity into something that feels simple and elegant.
  • Own a problem end to end: we expect everyone to own problems as both individuals and a collective, not areas or remits. We believe this makes for a much more creative, collaborative and varied outcomes.
  • We're building a business, not a utopia: Our business has not yet earned the right to exist. To exist long-term, we need to turn a profit. We expect everyone to wear both product and commercial hats in everything they do.
  • High autonomy, high expectations: We extend a lot of trust, support and autonomy to everyone who works here, and expect everyone to return that trust with a collaborative, caring and welcoming attitude to others.
  • Nothing trumps physical health, mental health and family: Without our health and our loved ones, we cannot succeed in building Resolve. We're not going to create a company at the expense of our health or the people we love.
