Banks haven't innovated their consumer offering for decades, making only incremental progress on technology such as mobile banking and contactless payments. Revolut, a digital bank, is among the first in a wave of agile, mobile-first fintech players shaking up the banking sector. Specialising in mobile banking, money remittance and foreign exchange, it offers rates up to ten times cheaper than traditional banks and with a much more attractive and functional user interface, it's much easier to use as well.

Revolut currently has over 15 million users, putting it in the league of Natwest and Lloyds (which it currently partners with to provide current account functions). In 2021 it applied for a banking licence in the UK and the US, which would allow the company to offer full-service current accounts with overdrafts and loans. While this process has been drawn out, if it succeeds it will establish it as a major threat even to the largest institutions such as Barclays and HSBC.

While Revolut has been enjoying massive growth, hiring on average 300 people a month through 2022 and growing from 2100 to 5000 staff, it has struggled with the slow approval of its licences and with a major data breachin 2022 which leaked tens of thousands of customers' details. However if it can push through these issues and restore trust it will be in a good position to build into what its founder describes as "a global bank [giving] access to all financial services".

Working on a disruptive product in a fast moving industry is extremely challenging but it's also extremely rewarding. Banking industry is broken. When I joined Revolut in Q1 2020, I had very little understanding about the banking industry. With the help of my colleagues and the great onboarding process, I was able to pick up the foundations of banking, global payment routing and transaction processing within a matter of weeks. Fast forward 10 months and I am starting to understand the underlying wiring of global money infrastructure. Learning opportunities at Revolut have been incredible.

The best part of Revolut journey for me has been working with my team. As a product owner, I really enjoy working closely with developers and designers. It is especially great when everyone of them is proud of their craft but humble in their collaboration with others. Current experience has made me realise that true tech masters have nothing to prove and, thus, don't entertain their ego. They simply focus on building great products together. I love it.

I joined the team here recently but during the pandemic so the entire onboarding process was virtual but there were lots of virtual presentations for new joiners which was useful. We have regular team meetings to stay up to date which helps keep us all on track and means we get to engage socially too instead of just sending messages and emails. There is lots of information to take in when I first joined but I got used to it quite quickly as I kept detailed notes of everything I needed to know so I could go back and look.
