The model has similarities to equity release schemes. However, Tembo is different as it will recommend interest-only mortgages to the benefactor, not schemes with no monthly repayments where interest can quickly mount up. The added bonus of Tembo's deposit boost is that it saves buyers tens of thousands of pounds by unlocking market-leading rates. On average, Tembo users could save £14,000 in interest charges over the initial term.

Tembo is part of PRIMIS Mortgage Network, a network of brokers which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. This not only means it will offer mortgages from a panel of lenders rather than the whole market, but also that it may have access to deals that aren't available elsewhere. The company is part of the start-up business accelerator, Founders Factory, which in turn is backed by Aviva.
