Otta's take

Theo Margolius

COO of Otta

Uber is a global ride sharing platform that was founded in 2009. It turned the traditional nature of taxis on its head, and in doing so altered the landscape of transportation services as a whole. Having gone public in May 2019, the company has since remained one of the major businesses in the ride sharing space and in 2021, they announced that 1.5 billion trips had been completed on its platform.

Over time, more competitors have entered this space internationally, including companies like Lyft, Bolt, and Free Now. Uber has successfully stayed ahead by continually branching out and expanding its offerings. On top of its original service, Uber now offers rides on electric bikes, boats, and even delivers takeout meals and daily essentials. Their strategic investment into Uber Eats has been particularly successful. It witnessed explosive growth in 2020 and generated $4.8B in revenue (the second-highest share of the online food delivery market in the US).

In recent years, Uber has faced complaints over the safety of their vehicles. To combat this, they have introduced several new features which will help both drivers and riders be more comfortable on their journey. This includes audio reminders to riders to wear their seat belts, allowing riders or drivers to record audio, and detection of unexpected route changes.

Diversity & Inclusion at Uber

Philip Graumann (Talent Attraction Program Manager)

  • Creating greater equity is one of the 6 company-wide priorities established by our CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, for 2021. This means increasing demographic diversity at Uber and becoming a more actively anti-racist company and ally to the communities we serve. Every member of the Executive Leadership Team is doing their part to make this a reality, especially making sure their entire organisation is behind this. Increasing diversity, equity and inclusion is at the core of the company’s strategy, and commitment to it starts at the top.
  • Our employee resource groups lead monumental efforts to enrich internal and external communities and spearhead global change at Uber. Our comprehensive ERG communities include Able at Uber, Asian at Uber, Black at Uber, Equal at Uber, Immigrants at Uber, Interfaith at Uber, Los Ubers, Parents at Uber, Pride at Uber, Sages at Uber, Veterans at Uber, and Women at Uber.
  • To make sure we act on our racial equity commitments, one of the accountability mechanisms we established is the Racial Equity Leadership Council (RELC). This steering committee is responsible for operationalizing the commitments to build racial equity internally and externally, within our products, services, and advocacy. In 2019, we also tied executive compensation to our D&I goals to ensure that our company leaders are being held accountable for this important work. For 2021, we established goals for increasing representation in leadership and have seen some positive progress, especially for women—plus a slight increase for underrepresented talent.
  • Welcoming everyone: Process, resources, and technology are put to work so that Uber can be a welcoming platform for riders and drivers and a supportive place to work for employees, who represent more than 70 countries.
  • Our commitment to equal rights: Through community outreach, training, and recruitment and retention, we’re helping to foster a workplace where everyone can be authentic to who they are.
