Consumer trust in data privacy has taken a hammering over recent years. Unscrupulous data gathering and usage led to a crackdown in the form of regulation like GDPR and changes in Apple’s privacy policies. As a result, ‘zero-party’ data (data given voluntarily by individuals to companies) is being heralded as the new oil - and a number of startups have emerged to help trade it.

Vault Data is one of these, and whilst it’s still in the early stages, it’s looking set to follow in the footsteps of other recent entrants to the market. On the one hand, individuals can use the platform to either protect or sell their online data; on the other, businesses can pay to access the volunteered data, and additional behavioural insights that Vault Data will generate from it.

Unlike competitors like Gener8 and CitizenMe, it looks like Vault Data is planning to offer cash compensation in place of rewards like gift cards and charitable donations. This could prove an appealing development for many individuals looking for simpler and more tangible rewards - so it will be interesting to see how Vault Data fares once fully launched.
