Otta's take

Power purchase agreements (PPAs), where long-term power is purchased directly from clean energy generators, are a great way for businesses to secure fixed, low, long-term energy rates - and from sources whose green credentials are far easier to verify. The only issue is, these have been historically difficult and costly to access. tem is a new startup looking to change this.

The company is still in its early stages, but it looks set to provide businesses and consumers access to the same financial benefits by securing PPAs of its own, and distributing this energy to customers. Once they’re signed up, customers are matched with a suitable generator, and the tem platform helps execute contracts, take payments, and manage invoicing.

This is a truly disruptive concept - and could prove to be a successful one. Whilst UK consumers are notoriously hesitant to switch providers, recent soaring energy prices could lure many into giving it a go.

tem is going to get a run for it’s money, though. A similar platform in the US, Tesseract, is slated for launch around the same time, and with an ex-Revolut founder and handsome funding under its belt, is generating real buzz.

During the interview process I wasn't quite as sure about why the approach tem. are taking was so important. But I now understand the flaws with the current system, leading to greenwashing and false promises, and why tem.'s method is the only way we can guarantee the energy that a company buys is truly renewable.
