Company mission

To democratize publishing and commerce so that anyone with a story can tell it, and anyone with a product can sell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language, or where they live in the world.

Role

Who you are

  • This is an ideal role if you are someone who is customer obsessed, and is as energized with guiding the 30k foot view, as you are sweating the details
  • You care about the experiences you provide to customers, and their shoppers
  • You take pride not only in what you build, but how you build, helping increase scale, productivity and efficiency in execution
  • You know the fine balance between empowering your teams, while giving them guidance in how to operate
  • Your decision process is guided as much in being data-informed, as it is from intuition of your past experiences and listening to your customer
  • You are equally comfortable in building both iterative and transformational products, with a passion for challenging the status quo and removing blockers
  • You are a deep payments expert, understand the ecosystem, and the levers that exist therein. You are familiar with PayFac constructs, especially as it relates to risk management of merchants and transactions. eCommerce experience is a plus
  • Leading a portfolio of products, building a long-term strategy, and working with colleagues at all levels and across subject areas to realize that strategy
  • The ability to connect business strategies, customer needs, and available technologies to deliver best-in-class products and achieve business goals
  • Experience in all stages of the product life cycle, from successfully bringing new products to market, meaningfully improving established product performance, and also migrating a large user base from a legacy offering to a new and improved substitute
  • A healthy understanding of the difference between install-base and hosted/SaaS solutions, and the levers available to influence customers in each of those environments
  • Familiar enough to work with engineering leads to make tradeoffs for prioritization and to scope projects correctly
  • Strong organizational, cultural, and people leadership skills. You are a strong cross-team collaborator, able to effectively work with teams across multiple departments, time zones, and functions
  • Excitement to join a globally distributed team. Familiarity with distributed work is welcome

Our take

At a time when companies like Facebook, Apple, and Google were turning into monopolistic market leaders, Automattic was building its open-source infrastructure on a distributed, volunteer-run workforce. Since its launch in 2005, the company has continued to evolve and expand as it built its new web empire.

Automattic is the company behind WordPress (which powers roughly 42% of all websites), Jetpack, Tumblr, Simplenote, WooCommerce (which is believed to run more than a quarter of all online storefronts), Longreads, Crowdsignal, Atavist, Day One, and more.

The company’s “Five for the Future” initiative allocates 5% of its resources to further the development of WordPress, and many other companies that utilize Automattic’s communities follow some version of the initiative, contributing back code and time to support the community. Still spinning out new projects such as an anti-spam filter and online identity safeguards, the unicorn company is a powerhouse that is well set to continue its path to long-lasting growth.
