Company mission

SharkNinja's mission is to positively impact people's lives every day in every home around the world.

Role

Who you are

  • BS or MS in Engineering (Mechanical or related disciplines)
  • 1-3 years of related experience in product design, electro-mechanical or consumer product development (including co-ops/internships)
  • Experience with hands-on prototype development in plastic and metal including using basic machine shop tools and 3D Printing
  • Familiarity with electronics (analog/digital), test equipment, and components common in small appliances (sensors, motors, heaters, PCBAs, etc.)
  • Familiarity with production processes such as injection molding and sheet metal forming
  • Competent CAD user
  • Competency in small-scale electromechanical prototyping (Arduino or Raspberry Pi)
  • Familiarity with MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Due to the hands-on nature of the role working with prototypes this is an in-person role at our Needham, MA office

What the job involves

  • The R&D team researches and develops new technologies and integrates them into new products
  • They are responsible for the performance of our products and “how they work” – how a coffee maker makes coffee, how an air fryer cooks, how a blender blends, or how a new yet-to-be-invented kitchen device does new kitchen device things
  • R&D Mechanical Engineers design and build prototypes, set up and execute test plans to learn how things work, analyze data to pull out deeper insights, and put all these learnings into action by making design changes to our products
  • This role is involved in the full product lifecycle from early-stage concept development all the way to mass production, continuously working to push performance and resolve issues
  • The core focus of this role is always technology R&D and improving product performance, but R&D Engineers here are not limited to purely technical thinking and work
  • They must be able to put themselves in the shoes of our consumers to understand what they want in an innovative consumer-delighting product, and then put themselves back in the shoes of an R&D Engineer to deliver exactly that
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering/physics fundamentals including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mechanical design
  • Solid analytical skills, attention to detail, and relentless drive to identify potential problems and take responsibility for their resolution
  • Intellectual curiosity and creativity, strong first principles thinking, positive can-do attitude, and proven ability to deliver robust, elegant, and innovative solutions to complex design challenges
  • Willingness to roll up sleeves and dive into hands-on development and testing workstreams
  • Ability to clearly, effectively, and concisely communicate with both technical and non-technical colleagues both verbally and in writing
  • Comfortable multitasking and responding quickly to shifting priorities without losing sight of longer-term projects and goals
  • Ability to conduct early-stage R&D experiments to understand and identify key product features or parameters that drive product performance

Our take

Consumer demand for new and better home appliances continues to grow. SharkNinja serves this demand by designing and manufacturing innovative home goods and devices. Specifically, it has a growing line of solutions that consist of Shark cleaning and home care products and Ninja kitchen appliances.

SharkNinja has been in operation since 1994, which is testament to the quality and popularity of its products. Since its initial launch in Canada, the company has expanded into the US and the UK. In 2017 SharkNinja was bought by CDH Private Equity for over $1.5 Billion, further proof of its impressive market value. Perhaps more evidence is that it brings in annual revenues of around $4B.

SharkNinja’s main challenge is facing down big-name competitors such as home appliance giant Dyson. In fact, through innovative design, it seized the market-leading spot in traditional vacuums from Dyson and is only second to iRobot in sales of robotic models. A 2023 IPO saw an extra $296 million in funding added to SharkNinja's pot and was followed by product launches in new sectors such as air conditioning and food cooling, indicating that the company is still full of new product ideas.
