Who you are
- At least 5+ years of experience developing production software, with a strong preference for Platform (and PubSub) experience
- Advanced Degree in Computer Science or Equivalent experience in lieu of degree
- Experience working with Cloud Infrastructure (eg. AWS, GCP)
- Passion for building, operating, and debugging distributed systems at scale
- Boundless curiosity, autonomy, and a strong sense of accountability
- Experience overseeing customized development for multiple projects
- Experience envisioning a technical approach/solution, socialize it and align partners towards it
- Experience balancing urgency to implement vs technically correct solution
- Additional bonus if you have prior experience with Kafka
What the job involves
- The PubSub team is responsible for providing the asynchronous task processing infrastructure so that Cash App can scale. The suite of offerings PubSub currently provides includes Eventing (Kafka), Job Queues (SQS), real time updates to clients (NATS), and kPow! (UI for Kafka)
- The PubSub team is also responsible for creating, upgrading, and maintaining the infrastructure of their product offerings, as well as enabling governed access to their data across BUs. PubSub customers are product and engineering at Cash App and Block
- Design, build, and support infrastructure projects that provide critical support for tremendous processing requirements and distributed system pattern libraries to customers
- Dig into the many parts of a large platform using a wide variety of analytical tooling, and if necessary, add some new ones
- Use a data-driven approach to make the call on new infrastructure or product offerings that might need to be added
- Work with bleeding edge cloud technologies
Our take
Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.
The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.
Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
