Company mission

To keep human connection at the heart of commerce.

Role

Who you are

  • To succeed in this role you are compelled in equal measure by system or process redesigns as well as strategic analysis and storytelling
  • Importantly, you’ll be a self-starter with a strong sense of accountability and a keen desire to learn about ecommerce, operations, and more
  • 7-10 years of experience in program management, business operations, consulting, or a similar role
  • Outstanding relationship-building and partner management, including with senior-level employees. You are able to influence without authority
  • Consistent track record of using systems thinking to create new processes or improve existing ones to help teams focus and minimize waste. Experience managing and developing systems to track KPI progress and manage resource allocation preferred
  • Sense of strong accountability and ownership over work
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You create crisp and concise email communications, and know how to tell a compelling story through slide decks
  • Adept at balancing the near-term detailed view (how and when) with the broader long-term view (why and what), and equally interested in both
  • Experience in ecommerce or marketplace business preferred

What the job involves

  • As a Strategic Program Manager on the team, you will be responsible for supporting our company’s top priority cross-functional programs that will have a significant impact on Etsy
  • We view program managers as stewards of the program they support - from ensuring a clear strategy, to building buy-in with the Executive Team, to driving many disparate groups toward outcomes
  • This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Marketplace Strategy & Services, Strategy & Operations
  • The Strategy & Operations team drives strategy development and builds systems to enable investment in, accountability for, and teams’ understanding of that strategy
  • This role supports the Operations and Marketing Org (COMO), which is inclusive of Marketing, Trust & Safety, International, Strategy & Operations, and Customer Support functions
  • Partner with the cross-functional program leadership team and sponsor to develop a program strategy (the what and why) that is clear, supports the program objectives, and is well understood by others
  • Establish and maintain a clear cross-functional governance and operating model (the how, when, with who we meet, communicate, and decide) that clears the path for teams to do their jobs effectively - from the program leadership, teams, and partners
  • Optimize information flows for the program to support effective decision-making and transparent information sharing between different stakeholder groups across the company
  • Enable and ensure great collaboration between teams across the company, and amplifying their effectiveness to lead to better outcomes
  • Proactively identify gaps in the program’s operating rhythms, build lean scaffolding to fix them, and assess your practices to see if they’re suitably effective
  • Zoom in and zoom out, to see how all the moving parts should tie together, and systemize them into a functioning program aligned to a single set of goals
  • Produce accurate and timely reporting of the program’s status throughout its life cycle
  • Drive transparent and effective communication to stakeholders regarding program progress, flags and decisions. Be able to proactively adjust your communications to the right audience - leveling up for senior leadership, up to the Executive Team
  • Influence without authority. Build credibility and establish relationships with stakeholders at multiple levels, from C-Suite to Product squad; and be able to guide strategic conversations, decision making, and planning
  • Proactively identify the important gaps or risks to meeting the strategic program goals and create strategies/solutions within the broader program
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law

Our take

Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.

Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.

However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
