Company mission

To expand human capabilities through advanced AI.

Role

Who you are

  • The ideal candidate has experience building tools and infrastructure for a large-scale deep learning system
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with Python and an ML framework (PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow, etc
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience building reliable backend systems
  • Experience with Linux and command line tools
  • Experience using and managing data stores (Postgres, MySQL, ElasticSearch, Redis, etc.)

Desirable

  • Experience managing HPC clusters for deep neural network training
  • Experience managing cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Experience with job scheduling / orchestration tools (SLURM, Kubernetes, LSF, etc.)
  • Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, Chef, etc.)
  • Experience building data annotation and dataset management tools

What the job involves

  • Our AI team is looking for an experienced Distributed Systems Engineer to take our AI infrastructure to the next level
  • This role is focused on building AI training and deployment, behavior evaluation, and data management software
  • Design and implement software tools used to collect and manage data, train deep neural networks and deploy them on humanoid robots
  • Collaborate with our AI and robotics engineers to identify software requirements and take the lead on implementing them
  • Run and maintain reliable backend distributed systems at scale
  • Collaborate with our customers on defining and executing the software strategy for deploying humanoid robots in production

Our take

With an aging population and 10 million unsafe and undesirable jobs in the US, labour supply growth is predicted to flatline in the 21st century. Automation of jobs is a potential solution to these growing societal problems.

Exiting stealth in 2023, Figure Robotics joins a slew of AI and manufacturing companies with a distinct interest in humanoid robotics. The benefits of humanoid robotics, according to Figure, include the potential for them to take over unsafe or undesirable jobs from people, essentially leading to a happier and more purposeful society.

There’s clearly a long way to go, with Figure aware that its mission to expand human capabilities through advanced AI will take decades. That said, it has managed to raise more than $750 million in funding so far to help its long-term growth. And, with preliminary testing underway through a partnership with BMW, the company is certainly off to a good start.

Company values

  • Move Fast & Be Technically Fearless - Hesitation is the enemy of momentum. We are tackling today's most complex technological challenges by testing, experimenting, and taking calculated risks to embrace the unknown without fear of failure
  • Product First, Mission Focused - Our product and our mission are one in the same: to bring a commercially viable humanoid to the market. We are builders, designers, and engineers united by a commitment to that mission, avoiding distraction and unrelated activities to remain laser-focused on shipping a safe, high quality product
  • Aggressively Optimistic - Building Figure won’t be an easy win; it will require decades of commitment and ingenuity. We’re humbled by our mission, and aspire to remain optimistic even in the face of enormous hurdles
