Role
Who you are
- You are a senior-level full stack engineer with a passion for building scalable and user-friendly web applications
- You have experience in developing both front-end and back-end features using modern technologies and frameworks. You are highly proficient in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Node.js
- You’ve used React as a front-end framework, databases and cloud services and it delights you to create elegant user interfaces
- You are comfortable working in an agile environment and collaborating with other engineers, designers, and product managers
- You are eager to learn new skills and technologies and share your knowledge and mentor more junior engineers
- You have a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for your work and strive to deliver high-quality code that meets the needs of the users and the business
- To thrive in this role, you ideally have several years’ experience with React (alternatively, Angular, Vue, or similar), Typescript (alternatively, Java, C#, or similar), and HTML/CSS
- You have an understanding of software design principles such as DRY, SoC, Dependency Injection, etc
- Give attention to creating modular, secure, and well-tested code
- Experience building and shipping end-to-end features to a sizable user base
- Working knowledge of computer science fundamentals like data structures and algorithms
- Ability to self-direct the planning and scoping for a project
- Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- (Bonus) Experience with our tech stack which includes: NextJS, Node, GraphQL, PostgresSQL, Docker, Google Kubernetes Engine, Relational databases
- (Bonus) Experience with cross-team collaboration

What the job involves
- We have developed a breakthrough AI algorithm that creates synthetic, realistic speech from text. You will help develop the creative studio powered by this algorithm, enabling creatives to make lifelike voice over for videos, audiobooks, and training programs
- In this role, you’ll be responsible for owning the development of features and and help maintain components of our Text-to-Speech application, Studio
- This includes following design specifications, owning delivery of parts of larger engineering initiatives, and working both collaboratively as well as independently in a mature web codebase
- The projects you'll undertake are geared toward bringing improvements and new functionality to the WellSaid Labs Studio
- Working directly with our product team, you'll be tasked with developing features that have high impact and visibility in our customers' daily interactions with Studio as well as help WellSaid Labs improve and create a world-class software solution for creative teams
- In this role, you’ll develop:
- A collaborative user interface for generating audio
- The next version of our editor
- Our avatar marketplace
- A streamlined custom onboarding experience
- An improved user experience for larger teams to collaborate together to create human-parity audio
- Also, you’ll be challenged to:
- Find opportunities to mature our engineering processes
- Build complex features to completion
- Lead a feature team with technical expertise
- Build an accessible and inclusive user experience
- Collaboratively make technical decisions that are inline with the future architectural vision
- Participate in cross-team collaboration to solve technical challenges
- Provide technical guidance for software development by the Studio software team
- Tackle challenges creatively and critically evaluate your work

Application process
- During the interview stage, you can expect:
- An ‘intro’ call with our recruiting team (25-30 minutes)
- An interview with the hiring manager (30 minutes); if there’s a match we’ll schedule an interview loop with the team
- A technical screen through ByteBoard
- An Interview loop with 3-4 interviews (1 hour each) with the team members you will be potentially working with
- All interviews will be remote via Google Meets; we are happy to make accommodations you might need to feel comfortable and set up for success in our process
Our take
WellSaid Labs offers creative teams a real time text-to-speech engine that leverages AI to produce natural-sounding voice overs and clips, all based on the voices of real people. The company emerged from the 2019 Allen Institute for AI incubator in 2019.
The most common rebuttal to this kind of technology is how it can be used with malicious intent – deepfakes being the most pertinent concern. This is precisely why WellSaid Labs has no current intention to bring its product to a consumer market – a wise decision. It’s also worth noting that all its voice samples are provided with consent of the original talent.
Provided the pricing point is right, there’s an obvious attraction to being able to quickly create audio content at an enterprise level. The fact that the startups first major funding round was oversubscribed indicates that investors see this attraction too.
