Company mission

To make higher education accessible and affordable for everyone.

Role

Who you are

  • 7+ years of experience at leading technology companies in Product Management or other roles bridging business and technology
  • Experience working on 0-1 products, including customer discovery, MVP definition, feature testing and taking this new product to market
  • Experience setting success metrics, and using analytical tools to dig into product data and customer feedback to see what to build next
  • Experience building consumer products
  • Willing to travel to the Oakland office monthly to collaborate with other Earnies

Desirable

  • Experience in the Fintech space, or similar industries where the software product is not the sole product (e.g. healthcare)
  • Experience building products with predictive models driving parts of the customer experience - this could included personalization, algorithmic recommendations, or use of emerging AI tech to solve a customer problem
  • Experience leading a small team, and the ability to flex from player to coach when needed

What the job involves

  • The Principal Product Manager of New Products position will report to the Chief Product Officer
  • Play a key role in advancing our mission
  • At Earnest, we have invested in empowering students with financial support and supercharging their ability to pay down their debt so they can get on the right financial track fast
  • We already help our customers pay down their student debt with our simple and flexible student loan refi product, and we are looking to take the next step in our mission by building out our next product line for those customers
  • Take on the exciting and challenging goal of bringing this next product line to market
  • You will partner with our research and design team to understand the problems that our customers face, define the strategy for a product that will solve those problems, lead initial experimentation to validate that solution, and then grow the product from there
  • This is a 0-1 role with a great deal of autonomy and responsibility for outcomes, but you won’t be tackling this problem alone - you will work closely with other leaders across Engineering, Design, Marketing, Operations, and Data to define the strategy, build the roadmap, test hypotheses, and ultimately bring an amazing solution to market for our customers
  • The result of your work will be to bring Earnest’s next product to market, setting the course for us to help customers in new and broader ways, as well as building out the next source of revenue growth for the company

Otta's take

CEO of Otta

Earnest offers student loan refinancing and personal loan products. It looks at thousands of data points such as education, saving patterns, investments, and career trajectory to issue a unique credit score, which can prove a lifeline for students who may otherwise struggle to qualify for loan refinancing.

For the portion of student debtors with low credit scores, Earnest is one of a few scant options. Borrowers can choose their own loan terms to fund up to the full cost of their education, and there are no origination, application, or late fees.

Earnest has grown from distributing $8M loans in its first year of business to an impressive total $18.5 billion in student loans refinanced, and has served upwards of 200,000 people. With student loans representing such a huge sector of lending, there should be plenty of room for Earnest to continue expanding in the future.

Company values

  • Earn Happy Customers - Our customers’ journey is ours to share. Our success comes from anticipating their needs and providing the solutions they’re looking for. This combination of empathy and action helps them become our best endorsers and biggest fans.
  • Better is Better - The path to great means getting better every day. We push ourselves, and each other, to remain curious and think differently. We know the value of compounding and how continuous 1% improvement leads to massive changes. We are always willing to challenge the status quo in order to achieve our goals.
  • PhD in Moving Fast - Our customers are tired of long wait times and large student loan bills so we constantly seek out ways to deliver faster. We refuse to waste time on things that don’t move the needle and we surprise teammates and customers with our speed.
  • Passion for Challenges - Perseverance and optimism are just the start to take on the inertia of a national trillion-dollar problem. We enjoy tough challenges knowing that if we persist through them we will make a difference.
  • Impact is a Team Sport - We maximize our impact when we act as one team. We each play our part and put team success above personal achievement. Earnies are willing to do what it takes to make the team better even though it may be uncomfortable for ourselves.
