  • Demonstrated software engineering experience: through previous internships, work experience, coding competitions, and/or research projects and papers
  • Proficient development skills in Python and C++/Rust
  • Strong fundamentals in linear algebra and 3D geometry
  • Familiar with training and deploying machine learning models and PyTorch
  • Experience with graphics rendering pipelines, such as raster graphics, or ray tracing light transport simulation
  • Open-minded and collaborative team player with a willingness to help others
  • Passionate about self-driving technologies, solving hard problems, and creating innovative solutions
  • Senior engineers are welcome to apply

Desirable

  • Master/PhD in machine learning, computer science, engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with graphics performance optimization and CUDA
  • Experience with inverse graphics and illumination models, such as material and environment lighting estimation
  • Experience in 3D game development, rendering engines (e.g. Cycles, Octane, Mitsuba2) and 3D software (e.g. Blender, 3ds Max, Maya)
  • Experience with sensor models such as camera, LiDAR, RADAR, etc
  • Experience with physics and game engines (e.g., Bullet, PhysX, cannon.js)
  • Experience with cloud computing (e.g., AWS Batch, Docker)

What the job involves

  • As a Research Engineer in Sensor Simulation, you will create the next generation of sensor simulation software for autonomous driving
  • You will collaborate with our team of world-renowned scientists and engineers to build innovative, practical, and scalable rendering and content creation solutions for self-driving
  • We value original, high-impact ideas and rigorous experimental validation
  • Be part of a team of multidisciplinary Research Scientists and Engineers working on building a cutting-edge and high-fidelity data-driven multi-sensor simulation stack leveraging graphics, computer vision, and ML
  • Work to scale Waabi World sensor simulation for high throughput dataset generation and interactive closed-loop scenarios with the Waabi Driver
  • Work on enhancing our controllable and diverse content creation pipeline to build rich and realistic digital twins in Waabi World, using the latest technologies in neural rendering and generative modeling
  • Have the opportunity to publish work externally at top machine learning, computer vision, graphics, and robotics conferences (NeurIPS, CVPR, SIGGRAPH, CoRL, etc.)

Our take

Autonomous vehicle technology is rapidly developing and many sectors are recognising its value. However, whilst the self-driving industry has made significant advancements there is much more that can be done. There are challenges in this space surrounding scale and developing commercially viable self-driving technology.

Waabi hopes to tackle these challenges and be the leader in self-driving technology with their "AI first approach". The company said that combined with a closed-loop simulator, this approach will allow both common driving scenarios and safety-critical edge cases to be tested at scale - solving one of the key issues in the industry.

Waabi successfully raised one of the largest Series A rounds ever raised in Canada, and has gone on to raise fresh Volvo and Uber-led funding in early 2024. While the company's focus is currently on autonomous long-haul trucking (launching its first generation of trucks in November 2022), the company is well set to lead the next generation of self-driving technology.
