Who you are

  • 2+ years experience as a data scientist or data analyst during which you extracted insights from large datasets
  • Experience in A/B experimentation and statistical analysis of experimental data
  • Mastery of SQL, and experience with R/Python and other scripting/automation techniques. Bonus points for experience with Looker, Tableau, or other data visualization software
  • Curious mindset to drive creative problem-solving and business impact
  • Proficiency in causal inference analysis is strongly preferred
  • Experience in an e-Commerce setting is a plus

What the job involves

  • Etsy is seeking a Data Scientist to join our Analytics team and partner with Product stakeholders to drive success and enhance the Etsy experience for both buyers and sellers
  • In this role, you would partner closely with the Buyer Experience group, whose mission is to create compelling shopping experience for all users
  • This is a full-time position reporting to the Manager, Product Analytics
  • Data scientists at Etsy use rigorous methods to generate insights that inform product, engineering, and business decisions across the company
  • We collaborate with partner teams through all stages of development: actively uncovering opportunity areas, crafting experiments to test hypotheses, analyzing the impact of our efforts, and highlighting takeaways

  • Work closely and collaboratively with management within the Product org to help shape Etsy’s strategy and vision
  • Conduct analysis on buyers’ and sellers’ behavior, helping us better optimize the features that are most important to our members
  • Design and analyze rigorous experiments, help teams set great hypotheses, and deliver robust analysis of experiment results
  • Transform raw data into important and impactful analysis characterized by strong data governance, technique clarity, and clear documentation
  • Improve or automate internal analytics processes to drive efficiency

Our take

Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.

Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.

However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
