To reimagine autonomous mobility through embodied intelligence.

Role

Who you are

  • 3+ years professional experience in Software Engineering, DevOps, CI/CD or similar role
  • Build systems experience: Bazel ideally, alternatively Buck, Pants, Cmake, Make, Maven or Gradle
  • Experience with CI/CD systems (ideally buildkite/gitlab CI/travis/circle CI ; bamboo or jenkins (with very thorough understanding of jenkins pipelines) can work
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g. Terraform, Ansible)
  • Experience in Python is required (but we are not looking for language-expert)
  • Strong debugging skills; willingness to optimise your code
  • Attitude to make the best for other engineers and yourself

Desirable

  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and Cloud systems (we use mostly Azure)
  • Additional programming languages (mostly Rust, C++, JS)
  • Experience with Linux systems (esp. Ubuntu) & shell scripting
  • Cloud Experience: Azure, AWS or GCP
  • Yocto/bitbake/buildroot

What the job involves

  • Making our build system faster, more efficient and shinier than ever
  • Ensuring that we and our engineers use the right tools in the most efficient manner to achieve our goals
  • Keeping tools, technologies and frameworks we use up-to-date
  • Performing general administration and technical duties in order to support activities and operations within the Build & Release team
  • Setting in operation a new system ensuring our pipelines are fast and reproducible to reduce the flakiness of different build stages across the entire company
  • Supporting the team’s objectives and technical strategies to identify and seize opportunities that enhance the overall efficiency of the team

Our take

Wayve is developing artificial intelligence (AI) that teaches cars to drive autonomously using reinforcement learning, simulation, and computer vision. Wayve’s core premise is that the big breakthrough in self-driving cars will come from better AI brains rather than more sensors or “hand-coded” rules which it believes are highly restrictive and not at all scalable.

The company said that it trains its autonomous driving system using simulated environments and then transfers that knowledge into the real world, where it emulates how humans adapt to conditions in real time. It ultimately relies on end-to-end deep learning AI rather than hard-engineered AI. This is one of the world's hardest problems to solve, but Wayve has made an exciting start and is taking a very different approach to competitors like Uber and Waymo, who are relying more on sensors.

Following a few years of innovative breakthroughs, Wayve now has backing from high-profile investors such as Microsoft and angels, including Uber's chief scientist Zoubin Ghahramani and Pieter Abbeel, a UC Berkeley robotics professor and pioneer of deep reinforcement learning. The company's strategic partnerships with outfits like Asda and Ocado to test-run autonomous deliveries, as well as publicity through the Minister is a show of confidence in the future of Wayve's solution to autonomous driving.
