Role

Who you are

  • The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating in a scrappy environment, with minimal support resources, can quickly learn and execute on their feet, are consummate learners, have a strong desire to get stuff done and not afraid to do grunt work depending on the needs and stage at the direction of the Head of Solo.
  • Much like an early stage startup, the culture of the team is synchronous and the work may carry into weekends. Aspiring Product Managers with strong analytical backgrounds wanting to level-up across a range of skills with an interest to see what it takes to start their own company at some point in the future would enjoy this role
  • 4+ years of Product Management or adjacent experience
  • An analytical and growth mindset with some design sensibility
  • Comfortable jumping into the deep-end whether to write scripts or follow YouTube tutorials to test things when required
  • Eager to learn and take direction from a small but very senior team across engineering and design
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively

What the job involves

  • As a Product Manager on the Solo team, you will work within a very small team and closely with the Head of Solo, Design and Engineering to execute on a range of different needs for a new emerging product at Mozilla.
  • Your primary goal will be to support the Head of Solo, a repeat entrepreneur, on a range of different tasks to take Solo from a 1.X product into a mature revenue-generating competitor in an entrenched category. The role is versatile and the tasks may involve more traditional product management duties to design to QA to slide generation to market research to growth and so-on
  • General product stuff: From possibly running standups to backlog prioritization to reviewing design to cleaning-up to writing light-weight specs
  • Growth: Doing the research and work to execute on various growth plans which may involve evaluating 3rd party vendors and/or building scripts to execute yourself
  • Research: Whether using ChatGPT or other, executing on a range of miscellaneous research tasks that emerge from understanding pricing to determining under-indexed go-to-market channels
  • Making presentations: Ranges of decks for internal to external talks
  • Analytics: Using ChatGPT and other help, writing BigQuery scripts to generate reports as required

Our take

Mozilla creates and manages a range of free-to-use software products. Their most well-known product is Firefox, the fourth most popular internet browser in the world. Mozilla is a not-for-profit with a focus on promoting online privacy. The company has a published manifesto outlining its commitment to keeping a balance between commercial profit and public benefit.

The companies other products include Bugzilla, a bug management platform, and Pocket, an award-winning digital content filing service. In direct odds with Google, Mozilla has recently launched a new product Mozilla VPN. The VPN or virtual private network enables users to browse the internet without being tracked. Companies such as Google rely on tracking user behavior online to target them with advertising.

Mozilla was also instrumental in creating the programming language Rust, which is admired for its brevity. Rust uses roughly half the amount of code as C++ to produce the same results.
