Company mission

Amazon aims to be Earth’s most customer centric company. Their mission is to continually raise the bar of the customer experience by using the internet and technology to help consumers find, discover and buy anything, and empower businesses and content creators to maximise their success.

Role

Who you are

  • Experience (non-internship) in professional software development
  • Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Desirable

  • Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
  • Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers

What the job involves

  • AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry
  • As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services
  • You will make a tremendous impact on Amazon’s business by enhancing and building tools and services for the EC2 core platform
  • You will have the opportunity to leverage Amazon Web Services and a wide variety of technologies and frameworks
  • We're building web services in Java, Go, Ruby and back-end infrastructure built on top of Amazon Web Services. Our full stack currently includes (but not limited to), DynamoDB, RDS, CloudWatch, SNS, SQS, Lambda and S3
  • We're building scalable high-throughput provisioning services, used to provide capacity for building EC2 and AWS itself!
  • We are responsible end-to-end for all products we design and launch, and your team will support the full lifecycle of what you own
  • Amazon and AWS are growing at an incredible rate. To keep up with that growth, we continually innovate with new processes and automation that simplify our operations at massive scale
  • Your work will impact thousands of engineers and teams. You’ll help us rapidly launch and scale our services while continuing to improve utilization. Every customer who uses Amazon’s products and services is supported by the computing infrastructure we provide!
  • Why you’ll love it: You will see all aspects of the Amazon business. You’ll work with massive data sets. You’ll improve the agility of our technical teams
  • You’ll be part of a growing, fast paced, and fun team. You’ll have ownership, not just responsibility; and you’ll define and execute processes to deliver both savings and productivity for AWS and Amazon
  • An SDE on the team is required to understand our software, deliver major improvements and features that meet critical business needs, and to support our systems operationally
  • The code developers deliver must be highly maintainable and available, as our systems are pivotal to the availability of AWS
  • SDEs are expected to become subject matter experts on the technology operated by the team with a rich knowledge of systems, how they work, and what business use cases they were designed to address
  • Finally, developers must always be finding new ways to improve our systems
  • Developers on the team are full stack engineers required to be able to work with low level Linux and network components, as well as much more abstract technologies, like micro services and websites
  • A day in the life:
  • You will work with a team of highly skilled software development engineers
  • Your day will consist of attending Agile/SCRUM ceremonies, deep diving into sprint tasks, delivering quality documents, designs and code
  • You will provide feedback to your peers on their code reviews, and be a subject matter expert in what the team owns
  • You contribute to operational support of the teams' stack, and support customers internal to AWS
  • About the team:
  • The team provides compute capacity for the internal services that power AWS
  • The team provides EC2 instances running Amazon Linux
  • To provide these compute capacities, the team operates provisioning software stacks including websites and APIs to acquire/release capacity
  • To deliver on our mission in providing capacity to our customers, we concentrate on the following key areas: Automation to operate at cloud scale, reducing operational overhead, and optimizing cost by working to reduce the capacity footprint in new and existing regions

Our take

Amazon is the world's largest online retailer, and is well-known for its disruption of well-established industries. The company is present in numerous verticals, including cloud computing with Amazon Web Services, AI with its range of Alexa devices and a global marketplace more commonly referred to as 'the everything store'. Acquisitions include Ring, Twitch, Whole Foods Market, and IMDb.

More recently, Amazon has been focused on leading the "third wave in digital advertising". Many businesses are now shifting ad dollars to retailers, which before would have been spent with online media platforms. Amazon's seen great success in the space, with its revenue from advertising now higher than its Amazon Prime membership scheme, audiobooks and digital music combined. This growth is particularly impressive considering its digital ad rivals (like Snap, Alphabet, and Meta) have suffered declines due to wider macroeconomic factors and Apple's iOS privacy changes.

Despite its dominant market position, Amazon will continue to be challenged over the next decade, including sustaining AWS's cloud dominance in the face of Google and Microsoft. On top of this, the company's e-commerce division is facing profitability problems despite its 2023 post-IPO debt funding of 8 billion. It will need to find new ways to stay above their competitors.
