Who you are
- While we don't expect you to be an expert in every platform, we expect you to have a solid computer science foundation and be able to master the technologies that we use today (and will adopt tomorrow)
- Most importantly, while you may not have a background in biology, you must be passionate about Concentric’s goal of providing insights to governments to drive policy
- Bachelor’s + minimum 15 years of experience OR Masters + minimum 10 years of experience
- Proven experience as a Senior or Principal software engineer
- Deep technical knowledge in multiple areas, including software technologies, frameworks, and cloud technologies
- Strong systemic understanding of Ginkgo software components and their interactions
- Ability to lead and coordinate activities between multiple teams
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills

What the job involves
- Our biosecurity and public health initiative, Concentric by Ginkgo, launched a nationwide emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing end-to-end pathogen monitoring services to schools, communities, and travelers
- As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead and advance designs across multiple teams, fostering communication, driving coding best practices, and architecting technical solutions
- Your role will be pivotal in launching company-wide initiatives, unblocking issues, and providing expertise to enhance team efficiency
- Your efforts will be critical to protecting people around the globe, from emerging biothreats
- Work with our design team to come up with delightful user experiences
- Lead and advance frontend products across multiple teams
- Foster communication between tech leads and guide other engineers
- Drive coding best practices and design patterns across Concentric software teams
- Research, evaluate, and incorporate new technology frameworks into multiple team projects
- Establish overall technical direction for the team and contribute to strategic company needs
- Debug on-call issues and serve as a front-end resource for senior engineers
- Execute significant front-end projects meeting strategic company needs independently

Research into the programmable nature of biological cells presents massive opportunities for almost every industry, but the technology is hardly accessible. Bespoke programming of cells requires cutting-edge lab equipment and an in-depth understanding of microbiology, something that would not seem feasible to the average product designer.
Ginkgo Bioworks sells programmable cell development services to provide access to the technology to industries outside of medicine. Whilst the company has already worked on medical products such as vaccines for Moderna, it will research and design products based on programmed cells for any product that it believes holds value.
The startup’s approach to providing cell programming services outside of the medical sector is smart, as an increasingly high number of industries recognize the potential for bespoke cell-based materials. Ginkgo also provides an opportunity for innovation where it previously was not possible by taking the research and design into its own hands where companies would usually need to facilitate such services within their company.
