Role

Who you are

  • Have 8+ years of experience or a proven track record in software engineering
  • 2 years of working with Elasticsearch is strongly desired
  • Experience with data processing technologies Kafka, Kinesis, Spark, Flink, or other open-source or commercial software
  • You ship code quickly and care about the real world impact of your code
  • Have strong abilities in problem solving and iterating on feedback
  • Comfortable with complexity in the short term but can build towards simplicity in the long term
  • Strong communicator with both words and data - you understand what it takes to go from raw data to something a human understands
  • Willing to work onsite in our SF office 3 days a week
  • Are interested in learning more about life science (prior knowledge is not required; desire to learn is a must)

What the job involves

  • The Search team owns and operates the search infrastructure and UX for discovery of data in Benchling
  • We recently rolled out Elasticsearch as our search infra (see the engineering blog)
  • In addition to document searches, the team also supports advanced chemical and biological searches
  • We are looking for a lead engineer to join our team to work closely with the product teams to deliver search driven capabilities to our customers
  • Build and operate the end-to-end platform for search and discovery at Benchling
  • Support end-to-end availability, reliability and performance of our Search systems
  • Contribute to algorithms and infrastructure for scientific searches
  • Optimize and scale our change data capture and indexing pipelines
  • Improve search coverage, and reduce implementation time for new features for applications teams
  • Designing and creating CI/CD pipelines for platform provisioning, full lifecycle management. Building the platform control panel to operate the fleet of systems efficiently
