Company mission

Cloudflare's mission is to help build a better Internet that is bold and ambitious.

Role

Who you are

  • A deep commitment to human-centered design principles
  • 8+ years working in professional UX, interaction design, or product design roles
  • Excellent visual, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Technical expertise and an understanding of designing for developer workflows

Desirable

  • Experience writing code and using developer tools and services

What the job involves

  • We're looking for a curious, user-focused, and action-oriented Senior Product Designer that is driven to design the best product experiences for the Developer Platform
  • The Developer Platform is a part of the Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) organization where new and bold products are built and released within Cloudflare
  • Rather than being constrained by the structures which make Cloudflare a massively successful business, we are able to leverage them to deliver entirely new tools and products to our customers
  • As a Senior Product Designer, you will work closely with other designers, engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to drive the best end-to-end experiences for developers
  • Your work will impact the developer experiences of a growing platform of products including Cloudflare Pages, Workers, R2, Databases, Media, AI, and more
  • While this is not a managerial role with direct reports, we expect our Senior Product Designers to lead by example and coach the team into doing their best work
  • Demonstrate talent and passion for designing end-to-end developer experiences
  • Distill complex problems into approachable steps through researching, sketching, and sharing ideas with your cross-functional team
  • Partner with product managers and engineering leaders to work through technical tradeoffs that affect product roadmaps
  • Partner with other designers on the developer platform design team to collaborate on shared patterns, product vision, and design goals
  • Facilitate workshops, kick-offs, and design reviews with cross-functional teams
  • Share what you learn internally and with the broader public designer, developer, and technology communities
  • Influence and contribute to the internal design process and team culture, supporting the team's current and long-term objectives
  • Drive the adoption of new design tools and methodologies to enhance team efficiency and product design
  • Make time to mentor other designers on the team and share your craft, learning as you teach
  • Find ways to grow design's impact within the organization, spending time to share design decisions throughout the organization that would benefit other teams and product areas

Otta's take

Xav Kearney

CTO of Otta

Cloudflare is a multi-service global network that provides web security and infrastructure, DDoS mitigation services, and a content delivery network. Founded in 2009, Cloudflare has risen to become an industry giant, with around 25 million global internet properties on its network.

Cloudflare has been responsible for a number of admirable initiatives, offering free web protection to human rights groups, journalists, artists, and US election websites. This goes some way to counteracting the flak Cloudflare has received in some circles for the controversial groups and users who use its services. This chequered history, however, has not affected its over 80% market share in the content delivery network field.

This is perhaps in part because it has proven sharp at staying abreast of the rapidly morphing tech and digital space and customer demands. For example, Cloudflare is shifting to 100% renewable energy usage to create a zero-emissions internet, and in 2020 released a feature that would help users navigate data privacy regulations by selecting where their data is stored.

The cloud infrastructure market reached $53 billion in 2022. While the Big 3 (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) own 65% of the market, that still leaves billions of dollars left for companies such as Cloudflare. Its ambitious and successful work is likely to continue being a crucial feature of the web, but in 2023, placed it in the crosshairs of hackers looking to exploit its infrastructure. The beginning of 2024 saw Cloudflare vow to bolster its security and patch vulnerabilities.
