Who you are

  • The ideal candidate will bring a strong product management background, a deep understanding of digital experiences, and a passion for sustainability
  • A proven leader with experience building and leading a team with a focus on your team’s development and engagement
  • Demonstrable customer and sector expertise at both macro and micro levels, either in the energy sector or others related to previous role(s)
  • You can clearly and succinctly articulate a long-term strategic vision, demonstrating an understanding of the influencing factors at play within that, including technology landscape
  • Ability to communicate clearly and deliver a succinct, confident message to a wide range of stakeholders up to and including board level
  • Passionate about design and customer experience, knowledgeable about product design, persuasion and content strategy, including product marketing
  • Proactive communication and stakeholder management, able to navigate a complex set of priorities in how to focus on the best outcomes for our customers and the business. Critically you know when and how to say ‘No’
  • Customers are at the heart of your product decisions, you should be comfortable with key facets of quant data and qual insights, research and experimentation techniques to optimise your strategy accordingly and drive the right outcomes
  • You’re adept at developing data driven product strategies to optimise performance and customer impact
  • Will help your team to set ambitious OKRs and take the responsibility to do what it takes to meet them, helping your team establish clear priorities and find ways of articulating them with your own team and the wider business
  • Be a champion for your product area both in and outside of OVO Tech - understand how it fits into the wider product offering, how it could evolve and inspire your team to do more
  • Act as an ambassador for and mentor to our product community - using that as an opportunity to learn, get support from other like minded individuals and give back to the wider OVO team

What the job involves

  • We are seeking a Head of Product to transform the way our customers interact with us
  • This role is crucial in enhancing digital engagement, driving sustainability, and supporting OVO’s commitment to a greener future
  • Reporting to: George Penman, Director of Product & Propositions
  • Your key outcomes will be:
  • Within your first 6 months month you’ll:
  • Strategic Vision Development: Successfully developed a strategic vision for OVO's digital-first strategy, focusing on closing digital capability gaps, enhancing customer experiences and aligning with commercial and sustainability goals
  • Team Leadership: Established strong leadership within the cross-functional team, inspiring and mentoring product managers, designers, and developers, while fostering a collaborative and innovative culture
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Effectively collaborated with internal stakeholders, ensuring seamless alignment and integration across UX, Engineering, and customer support teams to enhance digital adoption initiatives
  • Performance Metrics: Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs), using data-driven insights to continuously improve product performance and digital engagement

Our take

On average, home energy represents 26% of our carbon footprint. Ovo Energy wants to bring this to zero by providing cheaper, greener and simpler energy to customers. They are analysing meter data to deliver easy, personalised actions, turning electric vehicles into power stations with clever chargers, and building energy-efficient heaters. For households, their offering is organised into four different energy plans. that include interest rewards on energy credit balance.

In 2020, OVO completed the acquisition of SSE Energy Services' retail arm for £500 million, meaning that the challenger brand now has around 4 million customers in the UK.

While helping Ovo members halve their carbon footprints, the company is also working towards becoming a net zero carbon business by 2035. The challenges ahead for the company include encouraging consumer behaviour change, shifting towards subscription models for home energy use.
