Who you are
- 6+ years of ML software development experience
- Strong understanding of and experience with the entire ML development lifecycle: project setup, data pipelines, model training/serving and monitoring
- A track record of designing and maintaining production-level machine learning systems
- Experience with language models and generative AI
- Experience in architecting scalable and low latency services
- Strong grasp of computer science fundamentals
- A commitment to writing clean and maintainable code
- Interest in helping to shape the mission and roadmap of the team, and rallying others to join you
- Effective communication skills with technical and non-technical people
- Eagerness to share your own ideas, and openness to those of others
What the job involves
- The Square Conversational AI team builds intelligent and scalable machine learning solutions across all Square products
- This team’s primary focus is to automate and optimize Square product features leveraging state of the art conversational and generative machine learning techniques
- Our goal is to incorporate intelligence and automation into Square products like Conversations, Dashboard, Reports, Appointments and more
- As a senior MLE within the Square Conversational AI team, you will lead projects across the product landscape
- Strengthen your knowledge by using and learning a diverse set of techniques spanning all aspects of machine learning, with the focus on conversational and generative AI, to solve important business and product problems
- Collaborate with business leaders, subject matter experts, and decision makers to develop success criteria and develop new ML & data products, features and procedures
- Advocate for engineering best practices and upskill the team
- Drive end to end cross functional machine learning projects: you will build relationships with partner teams, frame problem statements, collect and analyze data, research & build prototypes, and finally productionize your ML solutions by designing and building their full pipelines

Our take
Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.
The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.
Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
