Company mission

To bring powerful and accessible fabrication tools into the creative hands of professionals around the world.

Role

Who you are

  • Have a desire to hone your skills and learn more about engineering design and the process of bringing products to market
  • Have worked with mechanical or electro-mechanical systems and want exposure to the inner workings of 3D printers
  • Have one-or-more of the following hands-on experiences:
  • Lab research, member of a project team, prior internship or previous work experience
  • Have an up to date resume and portfolio of your previous experience to highlight what you have learned and how you have applied that learning

What the job involves

  • Internship Term: Winter/Spring 2025 (January - May)
  • Designing 3D printers is a cross-discipline experience where each individual contributes a portion of the overall knowledge required to bring a product to market
  • It seems like a daunting task from the outside; however, it can be broken down into smaller pieces that, when combined, result in a sophisticated device that embdies a lot of science, engineering, and manufacturing know-how
  • Design, assemble, test, and evaluate the performance of 3D printers
  • Participate in design reviews and help solve design, engineering, and manufacturing problems
  • Polish your time management and communication skills to increase your effectiveness as an engineer
  • Build prototype components and assemblies using our in-house facilities
  • Put your CAD skills to work designing parts and assemblies, creating engineering drawings and learning about the importance of documentation control
  • Assist with direct communications to our vendors and suppliers to help overcome production challenges

Application process

  • A portfolio of your previous engineering work/projects is required

Our take

Formlabs' founders met at MIT in 2011, and set about creating a company that would disrupt the 3D printing market. While the majority of the industry was experiencing a crash, Formlabs managed to buck the trend by implementing additive manufacturing (stereolithography) to a desktop form factor.

While many 3D printing manufacturers have tried in vain to market their hardware to home users, Formlabs has maintained a laser-sharp focus on serving the needs of professionals and large-scale companies such as Coke and Sony. Striving to keep costs low while maintaining an optimal user experience, the company has sold well over 100,000 printers.

With considerable funding at its back, Formlabs has continued to develop new solutions such as a series of mass manufacturing solutions that enable its customers to dramatically increase their 3D printing output. As the largest supplier of professional SLA and SLS 3D printers in the world, the company is well set to further its position and achieve further global growth.
