Role

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Interest in or experience fighting spam, malware, fraud, or attack activity at scale
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in stream processing and data pipelines
  • Demonstrated experience bringing shape to ambiguous technical challenges
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

What the job involves

  • GitHub has a strong pedigree as a domain-specific social network aiming to connect communities through software collaboration
  • As with other social networks, GitHub is subject to users who aim to engage in bad behavior, resulting in complex user-facing issues with real-world implications
  • As a Trust & Safety Engineer, you will be at the forefront of protecting our community by building and maintaining infrastructure and tools to create a safe, inclusive, and productive environment for GitHub users
  • You will design, build, and maintain robust tooling solutions to detect and mitigate trust and safety issues, such as spam, malware, CSAM/TVEC, copyright infringement, and other abusive behaviors on the platform
  • As time progresses we expect to explore more innovative and exhaustive approaches to identify, anticipate, and fight abuse on our platform
  • You will be working with a dedicated cross-functional team that includes Hubbers from GitHub’s Security & Legal organizations
  • This includes collaboration with the Platform Health team which combats abuse at scale, Threat Intelligence which identifies and analyzes threats, and GitHub Legal which owns the Terms of Service and serves as stakeholders in defining and enforcing Trust & Safety standards for the platform
  • Write and review front and back-end code to scale our abuse moderation operations
  • Advocate for safety on GitHub. Work with Trust & Safety analyst partners to identify abuse and engineer detection or prevention strategies to mitigate harm
  • Work with your team to define and prioritize novel solutions related to safety
  • Provide thorough documentation for the systems you help build
  • Encourage the technical growth of your peers
  • Review new products and provide consultation to product teams

Our take

GitHub was founded to make a developer’s job easier with open and asynchronous communication, distributed version control, and source code management with Git. In the first year alone, 100,000 users were pushing code on the site.

GitHub has quickly become the world’s most popular platform for developers to collaborate on open-source projects from anywhere. Nearly every major company including Facebook, Google, and Apple hosts open-source projects on GitHub.

Github's approach to working mirrors its community, with employees collaborating remotely from all corners of the world. In 2018 Microsoft acquired the company as part of its larger strategy focusing on cloud computing services. GitHub is also continually evolving, with rolling investments placed into the continual development of its platform.
