Role

Who you are

  • You are passionate about building data organisations from the ground up. You are excited about the opportunity to inject the right culture and DNA into your team at its earliest stages
  • You have a background in data science or data engineering. Regardless of your particular data discipline, you are conversant in the full breadth of capabilities needed in a highly-effective data organisation, and are comfortable driving high-level data strategy
  • You have high agency and take pride of ownership in your work. You naturally take initiative, seeking out the best opportunities for impact
  • You have deep empathy for the humans whose behaviour and success your work helps guide, including couriers, end customers, and your fellow colleagues. You seek out the chance to hear directly from them and go out of your way to incorporate their feedback into your work
  • You value and practise clear communication, active listening, and intentional collaboration
  • Have at least eight years of hands-on data experience and data leadership, working within high-performing technology teams
  • Have at least three years of management experience
  • Have a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, physics, maths, economics, or computer science
  • Experience as a startup founder or in early stage teams is a strong plus, but not required

What the job involves

  • We are investing heavily in our data organisation, and are looking for a seasoned data leader who can help us extend the impact data has on our business
  • Set a data strategy, such as how we will embed data capabilities (e.g. modelling, experimentation, analytics) across the organisation, what data infrastructure investments to prioritise, and how data will contribute to the long-term success of the business
  • Oversee the development of data products at Relay (artefacts like models, forecasts, and operational research algorithms necessary for the efficient operation and growth of our network)
  • Lead and grow the data function at Relay, including data science, data engineering, analytics, data governance, data privacy etc
  • Reinforce and champion Relay’s data culture, while shaping the culture and identity of the data function itself
  • In conjunction with the CEO and CTO, design Relay’s approach to defining, implementing, and reporting metrics across the entire business
  • Collaborate with team members across every part of the company
  • Regularly spend time in the field understanding how the data artefacts your team produces shape the on-the-ground reality for our couriers and end-consumers

Our take

In recent years, e-commerce has grown considerably. Despite this, the retail sector is still in the early innings of digital disruption in the US and the UK (especially when compared to more digitally mature markets such as China).

Relay enables e-commerce through re-wiring the critical delivery infrastructure to address the growth of e-commerce in the UK. Not only do they enable orders of magnitude better delivery in speed and cost for retailers and consumers, but they are also doubling down on making sure their ecosystem of delivery drivers and the planet benefit.

Relay are early stage, and backed by founders who both have considerable experience at delivery service company, Stuart. With this expertise and solving a problem within a growing market, the company are well set make a difference to how retailers provide online delivery.
