Role

Who you are

  • What we’re doing here at Monzo excites you!
  • You have 4+ years of experience as a data science manager, ideally managing multiple teams or large teams
  • You know what it takes to hire, manage and develop top tier Data Science talent
  • You're familiar with using a variety of Data Science tools (from business intelligence, experimentation and causal inference to machine learning), and coding languages (Python and SQL). You know when to pick the right tool, and can help others do the same
  • You are a strong strategic data leader, with a passion for translating data insights into actionable strategies
  • You are a strong communicator with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • You’re excited by the opportunity to work autonomously to impact the future of a fast growing, ever evolving business
  • Experience in financial crime, fraud detection, or similar areas (Trust & Safety, Integrity, Security) is a plus

What the job involves

  • As we continue to scale, we’re looking for a Senior Data Science Manager to lead one of our key product areas for Financial Crime.
  • As a Senior Data Science Manager, you’ll be working in an ever changing environment, in collaboration with Engineering, Product and Risk teams, to develop and deliver the data strategy and help to lead a cross-functional team.
  • You’ll help us build and improve these for now and for our future roadmap.
  • We’re looking for a data driven strategic leader who can bring fresh thinking and develop cutting-edge solutions that keep our customers and business safe
  • You’ll work closely with Product Managers, engineers, and Financial Crime control owners in an agile environment.
  • You’ll champion the use of data, bring ideas to life through rigorous experimentation and data analysis.
  • Your work will focus on improving our efforts in financial crime detection, prevention and mitigation, ensuring we stay ahead of emerging threats and regulatory requirements
  • You will manage multiple teams composed of Data Scientists and Data Analysts, and help them grow, hiring new team members and supporting their personal development. Your team will inform strategy and measure the impact of the product changes we make
  • You will also be part of the wider data leadership group and help shape the role that data plays across the company. As part of your role, you will ensure that most day-to-day data-driven decisions can be covered by self-serve analytics through Looker to give data scientists the head space to focus on more impactful business questions and analyses
  • Leadership: Be a key leader in building and maintaining a discipline of exceptional data scientists and analysts working to make Monzo world-class at combating financial crime
  • Team Development: Help hire, develop, and retain top Data Science talent. Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and collaboration within your team
  • Project Management: Structure and manage complex projects, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery across various teams
  • Technical Guidance: utilise your technical expertise to guide the team in producing insights to guide our financial crime strategy
  • Collaboration: Work cross-functionally to align strategies and ensure that our financial crime prevention measures are robust and effective. Maintain clear communication with all stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences

Our take

Monzo is a challenger bank that fully operates online and offers a full range of current, savings, business accounts, and more. The speed of the challenger banks to provide a great experience has been impressive, and the number of competitors appearing has proven the consumer desire for innovation.

Monzo remains one of the popular online banks, with more than 6 million customer active users. The company faces competition as more traditional banks, such as Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, have launched their own digital banks. However, the new technologies that the company is built on enable it to expand quickly (with fewer issues) than the incumbent players' offerings.

With an increasing amount of people switching banks, the company's ever-expanding suite of banking and financial services (such as its buy-now-pay-later offering) has resulted in Monzo receiving the second-highest net switching gains among digital challenger banks (just behind Starling).

After setting U.S. expansion plans aside in 2020, the company launched in the U.S. market in early 2022, partnering with Sutton Bank to provide its U.S. accounts. After several years focused on narrowing its losses, Monzo hit profitability in the first two months of 2023. In the same year, 2 million new customers joined, tallying its customer base at 9 million in 2024.
