Company mission

To make it simpler and safer for people to move things and themselves around.

Role

Who you are

  • 8+ years of experience in general distributed systems and backend development
  • 8+ years of experience programming in C++ and/or with writing robust, efficient code
  • Experience in developing low latency, large scale, user facing distributed systems

What the job involves

  • The TaaS (Transportation as a Service) and Ride-Hailing Infrastructure team builds mission-critical backend systems, as well as on-vehicle software, that allows Waymo's autonomous vehicles to operate at tremendous commercial scale
  • In this role, you will report to our Senior Manager of Commercialization Software
  • Design and develop platform and infrastructure that supports various ride hailing businesses
  • Provide APIs for both our first-party service and partner services
  • Optimizing the marketplace to balance the supply and utilization of Waymo’s autonomous vehicle fleet
  • Work with experts in the field of autonomous vehicles
  • Implement and scale the backend for Waymo's ride-hailing services. This collection of systems manages trip requests; provides APIs to client apps and partner services; calculates pickup and ride times; matches right vehicles to riders; calculates the price of rides
  • Work closely with cross functional partners to design and implement the ride-hailing platform to provide ride-hailing services for various different partners
  • Develop expertise in and make use of various Google technologies, like Borg, Spanner, Flume, and custom-built systems for our specific problems

Our take

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google self-driving car project in 2009. After initial development, it secured permits to deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix and San Francisco, but has recently hit a major bump in the road with safety concerns that resulted in a recall of over 400 self-driving cars.

With the autonomous driving industry already besieged by setbacks and public distrust, this development does Waymo no favours. That said, as an industry leader there remains the possibility it will see out the storm, but massive attention will need to be given to rebuilding trust with consumers if this is to be the case.
