Role

Who you are

  • We are looking for brilliant software engineers who have a passion for consumer products and want to join an energetic team that is changing the way people think about travel
  • Bachelor's/Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field
  • 5+ years experience in the realm of large-scale data processing, distributed systems, and/or machine learning infrastructure, with an understanding of the complexities associated with production environments
  • Familiarity with operational tooling for ML services (monitoring, alerting, etc), and architecting distributed microservice systems for model hosting/serving
  • Experience with public cloud systems (particularly AWS), Kubernetes, and Terraform is a significant plus
  • Strong hands-on programming skills, particularly in Java (or other JVM languages) and Python, with an ability to develop robust, scalable, and maintainable code
  • Strong sense of ownership, motivation, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of your work
  • Solid computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, database concepts, distributed systems, and search
  • Strong communicator. Writing clear documentation and explaining complex technical concepts to designers, support, and other engineers is no problem for you
  • Technical leader driving large and complex projects impactful to the business
  • Enjoy solving problems and helping others meet their goals
  • Excited to work in a diverse, inclusive environment

What the job involves

  • We ship code daily, A/B test extensively, and have a primary role in creating the product from inception to implementation
  • There’s much to do, and you’ll be responsible for making some real cool stuff happen
  • Our APIs, internal services, and web app are at the core of our stable of software that’s reinventing mobility
  • Be a member of a small team of talented engineers and designers and play a major role in shaping an exciting app that’s changing how people travel and think about car ownership
  • Build a world-class machine learning platform that will power a rapidly growing number of products and functions across Turo
  • Partner with data scientists to train and serve state of the art models to our customers
  • Identify areas for and deliver platform-level impact
  • Collaborate with a wide range of internal teams, being attentive to identify and understand their pain points and underlying needs
  • Produce high-quality maintainable code, test it, collaboratively review it and ship it
  • Scope and prioritize work with a focus on incremental delivery with a high bar for excellence, but recognizing the business benefits of having something now vs delayed perfection
  • Work efficiently in a constantly changing and growing environment where the process is fluid and creative solutions are desired

Our take

Turo is the world’s largest car rental marketplace. The comparisons with AirBnb are obvious but not unfounded - ‘hosts’ make their cars available to ‘guests’ who benefit from short-term rentals without the cost of purchasing their own automobile.

The startup has reinvented the car-rental marketplace, previously dominated by incumbents like Avis. By allowing users to rent directly from the car owner themselves, Turo is bringing transparency, efficiency, and liquidity to the industry while hosts earn additional income.

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges the company needs to overcome is similar to those that plagued other major sharing-economy companies like Uber - regulation. Specifically Turo faces disputes over bad-faith hosts and from incumbent players, especially regarding airport use. Since its 2022 IPO, Turo has been eyeing further global expansion and targeting a series of strategic acquisitions and partnerships which will expand its product suite for hosts and guests alike.
