Company mission

Plaid's mission is to unlock financial freedom for everyone.

Role

Who you are

  • 5+ years in product management. You have a proven track record of developing multi-quarter roadmaps, driving outcomes and successfully launching products from the ground up (0-to-1)
  • 4+ years in core payments. You have direct experience with at least one major U.S. payment rail (credit/debit card processing, ACH, other push/pull payment instruments), a deep understanding of the payments ecosystem (merchants, networks, processors, banks) and strong money movement fundamentals (authorization, settlement, dispute handling, chargebacks/returns, and refunds)
  • Deep knowledge in payment risk management. You have managed payment risk functions or teams within environments such as Payment Service Providers (PSPs), Originating Depository Financial Institutions (ODFIs), card acquirers/issuers, or a payment organization in general
  • You have a close familiarity with payment authorization/funding process, loss exposure control, loss reserve planning, and related payment pricing strategies
  • Customer & revenue focused. You are comfortable and enthusiastic about interacting with customers, understanding their needs and priorities, and translating these insights into impactful product features that drive revenue
  • High initiative and get things done. You are self-motivated with a strong bias for action. You are capable of moving quickly to achieve outcomes. You have a high slope for learning and can jump into new domains/problems and make an impact quickly
  • [Nice to have] Hands-on experience building “faster” ACH products (2-day payroll, “instant” ACH settlement, or ACH/Card/RTP/OCT payment rail optimization)
  • [Nice to have] Hands-on experience building enterprise or developer focused API products
  • [Nice to have] Previous startup experience. You have experience working in a dynamic/high growth environment

What the job involves

  • We are looking for an experienced product manager to join our dynamic team as the Product Manager for Payment Risk
  • In this role, you will shape the strategic direction of our pay-bay-bank offerings by developing of an innovative 0-to-1 payment risk solution that enables a more instant ACH payment and settlement experience for both consumers and merchants
  • You will help transform our existing products into a state-of-the-art system that not only minimizes risk but also optimizes payment experiences
  • Help define the roadmap and influence the strategic direction of our payment products
  • Drive multiple workstreams across the organization, simultaneously
  • Work directly with customers to identify their product needs and priorities
  • Define critical product features and execute the build plan with full-stack and machine-learning engineers
  • Build a risk framework with data scientists and the ACH operations team to minimize losses for both customers and Plaid
  • Devise pricing and sales strategies with GTM and partnership teams
  • Closely collaborate with other product teams to seamlessly integrate payment UX and money movement components
  • Partner with the customer engineering team to enhance post-integration customer engagement and constantly optimize for customer support scaling

Our take

Plaid builds infrastructure that allows a consumer to interact with their bank account on the web through a number of third-party applications, like Venmo, Robinhood, Coinbase, Acorns and LendingClub.

Plaid has integrated with 12,000 financial institutions in the US, Canada, the UK and Europe. About a quarter of people living in North America with bank accounts have linked with Plaid through at least one of the hundreds of apps that leverage Plaid’s application program interfaces (APIs). The platform allows companies to create financial services applications without having to hire their own team of engineers to build out a tool that connects apps to its users’ bank accounts.

This is very valuable in a world where there are increasing number of fintechs, so the demand for Plaid's services are only going to grow. Despite its strong position, it has not been immune to the difficult global economic situtation and was forced to restructure at the end of 2022, laying off some of its workforce. However it is still experiencing growth and is well-positioned to weather the current economic uncertainty.
