Company mission

To enable businesses and their communities to thrive in the digital economy.

Role

Who you are

  • You have experience as a Platform Engineer, DevOps Engineer or similar role
  • Good expertise in Kubernetes (preferably EKS), with hands-on experience in cluster setup, management and optimisation
  • Good knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, particularly using GitHub Actions for automated software delivery
  • Goodnderstanding of AWS services and concepts, including ECS (Fargate), IAM, *LB, security groups
  • Experience in infrastructure as code (IaC) tools like Terraform
  • You thrive on driving technical decisions, analyse complex problems, and propose scalable solutions
  • This role will be leveraging Kubernetes (preferably EKS), Kafka (MSK preferred) as well as AWS for their main stack. Terraform and Helm should be second nature
  • If you are passionate about cloud-native technologies, containerisation, CI/CD pipelines and AWS, this role offers an exciting opportunity to drive technical decisions and collaborate on innovative projects

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience in one or more large-scale distributed technologies such as Flink, Spark, Hive, Kafka, Cassandra, etc
  • Experience in big data storage platforms and query engines with knowledge of cutting-edge technologies like Trino, Hive, Iceberg, Delta Lake, and Hudi
  • Familiarity with data orchestration tools, such as Apache Airflow
  • Proficiency with Helm, ArgoCD and Kustomize for managing Kubernetes applications and configurations through GitOps practices

What the job involves

  • Checkout.com is looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to join our Data Platform Team
  • Our team’s mission is to build a world-class data platform that powers our products and analytics
  • We're building for scale by utilising best of breed technologies
  • As such, much of what we design and implement today will be the technology/infrastructure which will serve hundreds of teams and petabyte-level volumes of data
  • Design, spearhead and improve our platform offerings, primarily MSK, Kubernetes (ArgoCD is a plus here), Airflow and Snowflake. Obviously not alone, but as part of a team. These are all “managed”, but we’re aiming at a unified experience
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and project deliverables
  • Collaborate in technical decisions related to infrastructure design, optimization, and best practices
  • Best practice on monitoring EKS clusters for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers, sharing best practices and fostering a culture of continuous learning
  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response, ensuring high availability and reliability of systems
  • Design and support teams on the AWS networking side of things, and be an advocate for best practices in this area

Our take

The payments industry has exploded in the last decade as eCommerce continues to grow as the use of cash falls. Checkout.com are building the go-to platform for all things related to payments, such as accepting transactions, processing them and detecting fraud. They've secured a steady stream of funding from top investors like Tiger Global Management, and are the strategic payments partner for some of the best known fast-moving brands globally such as Patreon, Dashlane, Udacity, Wise, Sony Electronics, and Klarna.

They focus on large merchants and try to make their product as customisable as possible, so that companies integrate Checkout.com as an infrastructure partner in their product. This increases the stickiness of the product and creates many opportunities for them to generate revenue.

Checkout.com have high quality proprietary technology (their platform has been designed from the outset so they can easily deliver incremental services as they expand their offering) and claim to offer the most comprehensive cross-border payment solution for digital commerce.
