Company mission

To give online brands direct ownership of their consumer data and interactions, empowering them to turn transactions with customers into long-term relationships—at scale.

Role

Who you are

  • You’re deeply technical and hands on
  • You love getting into the product and into the code to understand and contribute to solutions with your technical toolset, which is both broad and deep
  • You love working with partners in Engineering, Product, and Design to solve challenging problems for customers, and enjoy talking to stakeholders and customers firsthand
  • You believe the best solutions are those arrived through partnership with those stakeholders, and you believe in working hand-in-hand, not tossing projects over a wall for someone else to finish
  • You’re a leader who is able to drive projects forward, overcome challenges, and lead conversations to clear decisions
  • You have mentored and helped develop others in their careers, and while you are primarily dedicated to your own technical craft, you are able and interested to take one or two direct reports to multiply your impact as well as help develop Klaviyo’s bench of talented data scientists
  • Experience working with engineering teams and product managers successfully to deliver customer-facing features
  • Developing and putting models into production, while also owning and maintaining production models long term
  • Ability to develop technical roadmaps for solving complex business problems using ML
  • Advanced degree in computer science, statistics, data science, or equivalent industry experience
  • Proficiency in Python and experience using standard ML tools such as pandas, sklearn, PyTorch, XGBoost
  • Experience mentoring others and an interest in having small number of direct reports

Desirable

  • Experience with Sagemaker, Ray, Spark, Huggingface
  • Experience with LLMs
  • Experience working with customers directly
  • Industry experience in software engineering
  • Management experience

What the job involves

  • Klaviyo powers smarter digital relationships through a data-driven marketing platform that is built for massive scale
  • Data Scientists come to Klaviyo with experience in a variety of areas and from a number of disciplines in order to help us leverage this data to deliver more personalized messages and greater revenue for our customers
  • At Klaviyo, we love tackling tough data science and engineering problems and look for employees who specialize in certain areas but are passionate about working collaboratively to build features powered by advanced data science and ML technology
  • We work together to break through any obstacle or technical challenge in their way, and we push each other to move out of our comfort zone, learn new technologies, and work hard to ensure each day is better than the last
  • Klaviyo’s Data Science team continues to expand the usage of data science and machine learning across its product areas, and we want you to help spearhead work in new parts of the product starting with improving automation for our SMS Conversations feature
  • You will have the opportunity to address difficult problems through a fresh DS and ML perspective that will directly impact our customers
  • 30 days:
  • You will have finished on-boarding including engineering and data science specific on-boarding, and your local developer environment is set up and usable
  • You will have met multiple members of the Data Science team and Engineering team, and have started to familiarize yourself with both the Klaviyo product and the data sources available to them
  • 60 days:
  • You will be actively working on your first project in partnership with the Conversations team, and be an embedded member of their team actively engaging with the engineers and PM
  • 90 days:
  • You will have trained your first models and are in the process of putting them onto our production infrastructure in partnership with the Conversations team and the Data Science Platform team
  • You will be formulating a technical roadmap for the ML work needed in this area that helps realize the product vision for this area
  • Up to 1 year:
  • You will have trained, deployed, and maintained ownership of multiple production models for Conversations
  • You will have one or two direct reports that you are actively helping to develop and grow, and who are delivering impactful work
  • You and your team will have expanded your impact to other areas of the Klaviyo product

Our take

Klaviyo is a marketing firm helping growth-focused eCommerce brands drive more sales with super-targeted, highly relevant email, Facebook and Instagram marketing campaigns. From personalised newsletters to automated emails when customers abandon their shopping carts, the marketing automation platform makes it easy for businesses to capture, store, analyze, and predictively use their own data to drive measurable, high-value outcomes.

Klaviyo's CEO, Bialecki, believes that the main problem with e-mail marketing today is that there is a divide between two kinds of tools: analytics tools that help you understand what people are doing on a website, such as what products they are considering, and messaging tools that send them a marketing e-mail. Operating primarily within the retail and eCommerce industry, Klaviyo aims to solve this by offering a tool that brings together analytics and messaging. This allows companies to bring all of their first-party data into a single platform to get a deep understanding of their customers and then activate that data to deliver highly-targeted, personalised communications through email and SMS. In the process, Klaviyo's customers get a deep understanding of their consumers.

Klaviyo is a fast-growing company mainly due to its business model - the firm offers a concrete ROI for Klaviyo’s clients if the software persuades customers to make purchases by treating different types of customers differently. An IPO in 2023 has led to Klaviyo's release of Klaviyo AI, which empowers businesses to unlock revenue-driving opportunities and deliver exceptional customer experiences across channels. Still in its early days of public listing, it will be interesting to see how Klaviyo fares in the years to come.
