Role

Who you are

  • Programme Depth: True experience in managing significant delivery portfolios at senior level with experience in multiple delivery methodologies
  • Able to embed best-practice governance and documentation to manage large numbers of individual programmes, and adept at rigorously navigating the associated complexity, conflicts and demands
  • Strategic Acumen: Able to seamlessly link local gameplans and roadmaps to our Divisional data strategy, and articulate how it all fits together in a way that everybody understands
  • Be ruthless in finding the ‘why’ and keeping us on track even when things get pressured
  • Financial Experience: Hard-won experience of managing large budgets of up to ~£20m, and experience of successfully pitching for and securing funding to support delivery and roadmap priorities
  • Proficient in accounting, and expert in managing CapEx and OpEx lines
  • Stakeholder Gravitas: Great communication and inter-personal skills, and demonstrable experience, up to MD level and beyond, of managing stakeholders
  • Understanding and representing their needs, giving visibility of progress, and skilled in overcoming setbacks to delivery too
  • People Leadership: Experience of managing larger teams or smaller specialised teams of up to 20 people with high levels of subject matter expertise; genuine passion for developing those who work for you, and committed to driving our broader People agenda
  • Technical Knowledge: You’ll have a high degree of technical expertise: data is a complex business, and the delivery programmes involve complex technical detail
  • You’ll be super comfortable partnering with Data Engineers, Scientists, and Architects to support delivery
  • In addition, you will have minimum 7 years experience in the fields of Product Management and Programme Delivery
  • Domain Knowledge: Well versed and familiar with at least one core area from within UK Data: either in the Customer, Product or Viewing & Regulatory fields
  • You’ll understand how data in that area is captured, created and used to run the business and drive real value
  • Agile Expertise: Practical experience working within and leading teams through agile work; ideally SAFe trained, and able to hit the ground running with impactful experience in PI planning, and a natural ability to inspire and motivate teams of POs and Scrum Masters
  • Leadership Expertise: Tenure at senior level, with experience of being part of a wider Extended Leadership Team, and evidence of leading and inspiring others at scale
  • You’re used to supporting peers and helping to ensure that we’re always working together at senior level
  • Big Picture: You’ll either have very broad knowledge from across Sky and the wider Group, with experience in different teams and parts of the business; or you’ll bring critical thinking from outside, and give us greater market experience and new ways of thinking

What the job involves

  • You will lead the Delivery and Product Ownership team for a Directorate within UK Data
  • You’ll ensure that all of our programmes and data initiatives are resourced effectively and delivered to brief, on time, and to budget
  • You’ll need to lay out a clear vision, and lead the work to prioritise what needs to be done to get there
  • That will involve balancing the needs of the company, our stakeholders, our data strategy, and our People strategy
  • You will also be responsible for pulling everything together into an overarching Gameplan, ensuring that we have a clear and centralised view of projects, backlogs, dependencies, risks, and finances
  • You’ll be central to driving and developing a deep understanding of the business strategy and direction so that your Product Ownership teams can translate these into prioritised epics and features that can then be worked on by our Squads
  • The role involves managing a high number of individual programmes and demands
  • Some work will be identified and led within Sky Data, some will form a part of wider initiatives across Sky, and some will be generated from PI-Planning events within Sky’s Agile Value Streams
  • You and your team will also play a key role in co-ordinating work that is driven from within a Value Stream but which has a high number of external dependencies
  • Wherever it originates, though, it all needs to be brought together seamlessly so that we have clear line of sight of what’s required
  • You will then lead the process to ensure we have the required funding and capacity to complete the work successfully
  • You will need to pitch for investment and be involved in making trade-offs
  • Another aspect of your role will be to support delivery by ensuring that your Scrum Masters are able to guide and coach our Squads, manage sprints, and remove impediments
  • Because you’ll be responsible for delivering work from across a number of different products, programmes and Value Streams, you will need to carefully prioritise your own time and ensure that each one is being supported and driven in the right way
  • You’ll be expected to take part in key planning events, and join ceremonies and activities that form part of the delivery
  • Tracking progress and communicating that to key senior stakeholders is also key
  • That could be in Director Steering Groups, or wider delivery portfolio meetings alongside your Divisional peers in Sky Data
  • A focus on quality will be critical, as will an ability to land everything on time and on budget
  • Overall, you’ll be leading detailed and complex work that potentially has a high degree of regulatory scrutiny
  • Accuracy and trust are vital components of everything we do, and you’ll need to evidence that we’re delivering world-class work that meets and exceeds the brief with an eye on the future
  • None of that would be possible without a real focus on People
  • You will be working with an incredible team in the UK and in India, and your Directorate peers will be the Heads of Data Engineering
  • Success depends on cementing a true partnership with our Engineering Squads and you’ll need to be able to represent them in different forums
  • That will involve understanding and discussing technical challenges, and clearly explaining them to stakeholders
  • Your team will be made up of Delivery professionals, Product Owners, and Scrum Masters
  • You will need to inspire and develop everyone in your team and help them to be successful
  • Investing in their wellbeing, development and success is a critical part of the role
  • We aspire to be an amazing place to work and grow your career
  • Team Leadership: Embed a great working culture, and foster a strong sense of belonging; lead our people through changes and new working practices whilst retaining key talent
  • People Development: Develop career paths and development opportunities, and support recognition; ensure fair and consistent performance management practices are applied
  • Commercial Management: Take full accountability for budgets, timesheets, and recruitment; lean into cost challenges and own savings targets, whilst evaluating trade-offs
  • Planning & Governance: Produce accurate plans and estimates, and support the Planning Team; embed effective team governance, maximising your own and your Director’s time
  • Quality Management: Ensure and drive high quality outputs, with rigour applied to quality checking and testing; outputs always delivered on time, with clear signposting on the way
  • Technical Strength: Deliver solutions in a sensible way that’s mindful of future uses; use your knowledge to translate work and updates into clear language understandable to all
  • Relationship Growth: Maintain effective relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the team; work hard to understand the needs and performance of our customers
  • Collaborative Working: Proactively look for ways to help teams, peers and Division to succeed; showcase excellent communication, from 5.15 reports, to DSGs, to breaking news
  • Strategy Delivery: Personally understand, embed and contribute to the Sky Data Strategy; take ownership of the successful delivery of underlying Directorate Game Plan
  • Role Modelling: Act as an Ambassador for Sky Data across the business and beyond, living the Sky values every day; self-reflective, open to feedback and with a real growth mindset

Our take

Sky formed through the merger of Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting in 1990, making it the UK's largest pay-TV company. After the acquisition of Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland in 2014, Sky Group was formed, transforming the UK company into Europe's leading entertainment and media group.

With the recent success of their original content, Sky doubled their investment into this space by 2024 with a brand new movie and TV studio being built. This is expected to create an additional £3 billion of production investment in UK creative sector in the first five years alone.

Sky's streaming service, Now TV, was launched in 2012 to compete with the rising tide of Netflix and, more recently, with Amazon's Prime Video. With pay-TV subscriptions dropping and the video streaming industry expected to grow by a further 20% by 2027, Sky has remained competitive by offering a range of deals, partnering with Netflix, and developing its own TV - Sky Glass, as it aims to keep up with consumer trends.
