Otta's take

CEO of Otta

Private tutoring is a huge market traditionally dominated by expensive agencies (who charge extortionate hourly rates and take a big cut from the tutors that work for them by acting as the middleman).

The average starting price for tutoring can hit £50 an hour in London, MyTutor’s prices start from a much more affordable £18 an hour (the company can charge this low by cutting out the middle man).

MyTutor has built technologies to make online tutoring sessions smooth (e.g. it built an online whiteboard and makes it easy to share documents and upload past papers). All sessions are recorded so you can also play them back when they've finished. Along with academic support, the company prides itself in building confidence and providing mentorship.

The online EdTech industry has really blown up over the past few years and it highlighted the need for an online service that helps fill the gaps in today’s education system by delivering personalised support tailored to the individual. As MyTutor is conducted purely online, it can now really focus on providing quality education to a much wider audience.

Company values

  • Act like an owner - There’s plenty to do in a growing company. We value people who look for the right opportunities to take initiative, and work with others to drive projects through to completion
  • Understand the why - It's hard to know if we're doing something right, if we don't know why we're doing it. By asking ourselves and each other "why?", we put ourselves in the shoes of the end user, and think about how what we're doing matches the company goals
  • Be an energy giver - By bringing enthusiasm, and a ‘can do’ mindset to our work and helping others, we energise and inspire others: both the team we're working with and our customers, partners and external collaborators
  • Be proactive - A fast growing company is full of people who find problems and solve them. We are all responsible for anticipating future challenges and opportunities, and we all take responsibility for upskilling, adapting and improving ourselves and our teams to meet those challenges
  • Be constructively candid - Diverse perspectives lead to better decisions. We share thoughts openly and honestly, and are prepared to challenge constructively to improve outcomes (remembering always to come from a place of trust and mutual respect)

Diversity & Inclusion at MyTutor

  • Every role at MyTutor is open to applications from all sections of society. We see potential in every individual regardless of: race, ethnic origin or nationality; religion or belief; physical or neuro-ability; socio-economics or age; marital, domestic or civil partnership status; sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other characteristic that makes you… well, you. We are committed to conscious inclusion to create a sense of belonging, connection and shared purpose within our teams. We know it’s the right thing to do, and we know it will make us all happier, fulfilled, and successful in our work. You can also find a copy of our current Gender Pay Gap report on our website and we are continuing to build our roadmap of creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • We run our interviews with a focus on hiring across key Behaviours, Skills and Values: each job description will have the specific criteria we're looking to hire under the 'Who will you be?' section. This ensures we are only hiring with specific and measurable objectives in mind, avoiding traditionally biased-based questions and exploring pre-set and meaningful criteria.
  • We do not hire for a 'culture fit', we hire for a Culture Add. This does not mean that candidates shouldn't pay attention to our Behaviours or Values, and that MyTutor doesn't embody these, but relates to how we explore who will be the next best hire for our business. Instead of a 'culture fit' model where we look for people 'just like us', we hire with the intent to be open to peoples' lived experiences and how they can add a further perspective to our values, to their teams and MyTutor.
  • We offer flexible bank holidays - If you don’t celebrate the standard UK Bank Holidays, you can use them for other religious/ spiritual holidays that mean something to you.
