Company mission

Saturn's mission is to build community around the calendar.

Role

Who you are

  • 3-5+ years of experience in Operations or in another role requiring real-time problem solving, ideally at a consumer tech company
  • Deep experience working with engineers and product / project management
  • Experience managing processes and training others on those tasks
  • Data-driven, highly analytical (ability to understand highly complex data sets; ability to measure efficacy of programs and people)
  • Ability to flex between analytical, strategic and operational aspects of the job. Track record of working alongside Engineering and Product teams to launch data-dependent products and features
  • Experience working with external and outsourced teams; ability to design onboarding and reporting structures for third party providers
  • Willingness to manage, and also to work independently and autonomously depending on needs of the business
  • Knowledge of scripting languages, SQL, Python, and other tooling platforms is a plus

What the job involves

  • Saturn relies on robust internal infrastructure and tools to facilitate our support of thousands of individual communities
  • In order to create a magical experience for our users, operational work is required to source and maintain school specific data to power each user's experience - when they join the Saturn platform, we know exactly how their schedule operates
  • This requires sourcing and maintaining various sets of data, spanning from bell schedules to sports and extracurriculars, all with the goal of providing for the smoothest and most delightful possible product experience
  • We are looking for a leader to drive success across all operations functions at Saturn
  • As an early stage company, we have built Saturn with a lean and flat culture
  • As we scale, we are looking to continue maintaining collaboration across teams and an innovation- and product-focused mentality. We’re looking for a hyper-scrappy person to help us build solutions to scale Saturn to the next level
  • Design systems and processes across Data Operations, including sourcing, structuring and maintaining data that powers the Saturn platform
  • Work cross-functionally across Product, Engineering, and Design to support new and existing feature development. Partner closely with Product and Engineering on Operations Readiness programs for all internal tools and product launches
  • Lead Saturn’s Support function, including in-house and external support teams responsible for both technical and general support. Manage external support agents, including managing agent schedules according to customer demand and service level agreements, training agents, quality assurance of agent output. Help determine optimal mix/ratio of Full Time Employees, Contractors, and Managed Service Partners
  • Act as an advocate for our customers. Translate customer needs to the broader business, communicating progress, challenges, and opportunities
  • Oversee Trust & Safety functions, including design protocols and processes around content moderation and user safety
  • Manage an operating budget for vendor costs and strategic investments in operational enhancements

Our take

Saturn is attempting to rejuvenate the social-media space with a calendar-based app for high-schoolers to track their schedules, interact with classmates, and access important information. By layering messaging and other social features on top of a calendar feature, built especially for hectic school schedules, Saturn has seen explosive growth and is now active in institutions across the US.

Despite claiming this early success, the app has more recently been plagued by safety concerns - with parents claiming they were able to create fake profiles with little issue and access information including links to students' other social accounts and even their schedules. It has responded quickly with promises to improve security, but for now the damage to Saturn's reputation is clear - and it may take a while for it to find its momentum again.
