Company mission

To empower manufacturing teams to solve problems faster with the right data, at the right resolution, in front of the right people, in real time.

Role

Who you are

  • We’re specifically looking for an engineer who understands the manufacturing industry – this could be through a prior role in supply chain, hardware design, operations, program management, etc
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at startup scale; ready to tackle evolving challenges that require incremental and fast-paced innovation. Deep curiosity for the end-user experience and who approaches technical solutions from the end-user's perspective
  • Has written web app frontends for at least 2 years, familiarity with multiple frameworks is a plus
  • Is excited to be part of the product process and takes a user-oriented view of their work. We won’t ask you to be a PM or designer - you will spend most of your time coding or reviewing code - but we expect you to collaborate and take ownership when we don’t have detailed acceptance criteria or comprehensive mockups
  • Is comfortable communicating clearly and often, because the problems we are solving can be complex
  • Is thorough in their work, internally motivated, and excited about Instrumental’s mission
  • Resonates with Instrumental’s cultural values: Play to Win, Be Helpful, and Work with Joy

What the job involves

  • In this role, you will extend the frontend of the web application our customers use to interact with data we collect from their assembly lines
  • Our team is actively working to define product-market fit this year – a frontend engineer who has truly lived the problems of our users will be invaluable in building high-impact features
  • Deliver AI-powered features: Deliver AI-powered tools that many customers had not considered possible. That includes working with our Product, ML, and backend teams to translate complex AI concepts into easy-to-understand and actionable features
  • Great engineering experience: Our team prioritizes making the software development cycle enjoyable. We strive to implement processes and tools that allow us to rapidly deliver with confidence, including being able to deploy the frontend with a single command and “branch environments” that allow us to test any work in a production-like environment with real data
  • Learning and growth: Our unique approach to developing software enables our team to wear different hats across different projects while working with a massively supportive, low-ego team that values transparency and rapid iteration
  • Make an impact: Work in a highly cross-functional, fast-paced, and iterative environment, and be empowered to participate in fulfilling our company mission to eliminate half of the inefficiencies in manufacturing – a $12T problem

Our take

Inefficiencies in manufacturing are widespread and costly, approximately to the tune of $8 trillion. Instrumental is a company improving the speed and quality of electronics hardware manufacturing through software identifying defects, cutting waste, work, development times, and improving communication and collaboration across organizations.

It opted for a “continuous scale” style contract with manufacturers, allowing the possibility to charge more based on volume, rather than renegotiating during annual renewal periods. Moreover, electronics is a huge global market, and Instrumental have been careful to offer solutions that work with high manufacture but low internet-connectivity facilities, like many in China.

The company closed a round of series C funding, which will be used to expand research development for new products. With brands including Axon, Bose, Cisco, and SolarEdge using Instrumental's cloud platform and AI already, it is likely this list will expand following investment.
