Role

Who you are

  • We are looking for someone who is excited about joining a fast-paced environment and driving our next wave of growth
  • You're equally comfortable operating at 10,000 feet and 1 foot. You don't hesitate to get in the weeds and operate at the lowest level of detail, but you're just as comfortable thinking long-term and inspiring a team
  • You're unafraid of uncharted territory. Rapid change and learning is exciting to you, and you excel in new environments
  • You like data. You let data win arguments, and you're comfortable pulling and modeling large datasets. You are excited to use (or learn) SQL in your role
  • You're an operator. You have a talent for managing complex projects, converting high-level goals into action, and converting insights into scalable processes
  • You have 1-3+ years of experience in operations, technology, consulting, strategy, business development, banking, analytics, high-growth or early-stage startup experience or related experience
  • You have a completed Bachelor’s Degree

What the job involves

  • DoorDash is looking for top talent to play a pivotal role in growing our New Verticals Business in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand
  • We are hiring two Associates onto our New Verticals Strategy & Operations team to focus on expanding our Grocery, Convenience, Alcohol and Retail businesses across Canada
  • In this role, you will work on initiatives that range from growth, quality, cost, efficiency and so much more
  • The work you do will identify massive quality and cost improvements that will directly impact our ability to grow our New Verticals businesses
  • You will use a significant degree of analytical thinking and quantitative analyses to drive impact
  • We operate in a hybrid model, we prioritize getting our teams together in person once a quarter and you have the flexibility to work from home or the office on most days
  • You are required to be based in Canada and will overlap with cross-functional stakeholders across all of North America
  • Strategize. From first principles, you’ll develop the optimal strategy for best serving our customers
  • Lead and collaborate. This role will lean in on strategic, multi-category projects to ensure success during each quarter
  • Build. You’ll have your fingerprints all over driving the growth of DoorDash’s next big businesses. You’ll do whatever it takes to launch, get 1% better every day, and scale something completely new. This means everything from high-level strategy to nitty-gritty operational details
  • Experiment. Run tests and scale insights. Embrace the challenge of having multiple paths forward and no right answer. Growing a business in a competitive market will not be easy
  • Analyze. You’ll assess the operational and financial impacts of your decisions, and iterate based on data

Our take

DoorDash was an early entrant into the last-mile restaurant delivery business, which is now crowded with the likes of Uber Eats, Postmates and GrubHub. They offer restaurants an end-to-end delivery platform, generating new business and access to a network of delivery drivers.

To differentiate itself in the market, DoorDash focused on areas with fewer competitors and found success in this untapped market. Other factors, such as the company's targeting of restaurants which many not typically offer a delivery service, also contribute to its profitability. The company made its stock market debut in 2020 with one of the biggest IPOs of the year.

However, in light of increasing discontent around DoorDash's commission structure from restaurants, competition remains fierce. The business recently responded by publishing a transparent fee structure, but the number of options open to restaurants means DoorDash must fight to keep its customers loyal. Despite this, by focusing on consumer retention, logistics and technology, the company is likely able to maintain its existing growth and revenue.
