Role

Who you are

  • We are looking for a Platform Product Manager with a broad understanding of AWS architecture and expertise in one of our core platform disciplines (Kubernetes, Istio service mesh, Kafka, MySQL/Dynamo databases, infrastructure provisioning)
  • AWS Experience Required
  • Minimum of 4 years experience as a Technical Product Manager, AWS Solutions Architect, or Cloud Architect
  • Experience drawing relevant insights from ambiguous data and the ability to create and test hypotheses that address customer needs
  • Experience working with engineers as customers in developer tools, APIs, or infrastructure products
  • Experience with AWS Cloud infrastructure
  • Experience communicating product updates, milestones, and progress to internal and external partners, with the ability to inspire team members
  • Experience managing competing demands and priorities in cross-functional working groups
  • Strong customer empathy with experience shaping product direction and execution based on customer needs
  • Experience working within a globally distributed team

What the job involves

  • The Cash Cloud Platform, CloudPlat, is the foundation of all Cash App products and is managed by the Cash App Platform Engineering team (CAPE)
  • CloudPlat offers a highly opinionated abstraction on top of AWS infrastructure to deliver a world-class platform that is reliable, scalable, and secure, meeting the standards expected from a financial platform
  • CloudPlat serves as the internal backbone for Cash Engineering teams that develop Cash App features
  • You will help refine our customer-centric approach and collaborate with internal stakeholders to provide the best possible platform for our engineers
  • Vision & Strategy: Guide the platform product vision and strategies by collaborating with stakeholders, including technical IC leads, leadership, and customers
  • Discovery: Understand stakeholder needs through qualitative and quantitative methods such as customer interviews, surveys, platform usage metrics, and support metrics
  • Brainstorming: Partner with engineering counterparts to brainstorm and develop solutions to meet customer needs
  • Roadmap Management: Prioritize critical issues and work with engineering counterparts to establish realistic delivery timeframes
  • Maintain the product backlog, ensuring clear explanations of problems, business justifications, customer impact, and definitions of success. Collaborate with other Platform Product Managers to provide a unified roadmap, considering cross-team dependencies
  • Success Metrics: Define product success metrics and work with engineering to ensure they are measurable and relevant to guide platform improvements
  • Launch Management: Plan and manage the launch of new capabilities, ensuring that all criteria are met, timelines are communicated, and necessary tasks are completed. For large, complex rollouts, partner with an Engineering Program Manager to manage the process
  • Communication: Lead communication efforts for product launches, roadmap updates, and urgent notifications. Collaborate with documentation teams to ensure clear and valuable content is provided to guide self-service platform usage
  • Evangelization: Promote platform achievements and deliverables to drive awareness, adoption, and value among stakeholders
  • Vendor Management: Participate in vendor selection and evaluation processes

Our take

Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.

The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.

Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
