What the job involves

  • The Design Systems team delivers systems that support product teams in bringing consistently high quality visual and interaction design to all products
  • As a Staff Product Designer focused in Design Systems, you’ll play a key role in the architecture and evolution of DIG (Dropbox Interface Guidelines), and all design systems practices within Dropbox
  • Your role will be threefold: Drive the architecture and evolution of Dropbox’s design system (DIG), maturing it toward a “system of systems” that supports Dropbox’s multi-product strategy
  • Articulate maturity models, future visions, and tradeoffs for how DIG and systems practices will grow and change over time to meet the needs of the business
  • Strengthen design system foundations by prioritizing, delivering, and growing adoption for the right patterns and components
  • Use a mix of data and your own experience to form a strong opinion about what is most valuable to focus on, and see it through execution
  • Evolve design systems operations, education, and metrics to better support internal customers
  • Bring a spirit of innovation and continuous improvement to all Design Systems practices
  • Systems Strategy & Execution:
  • Work closely with managers and Engineering partners to bring systems strategies to life, and build high quality UI foundations that enable designers and engineers across the company to efficiently deliver great products
  • Deliver strategic narratives, components, patterns, documentation, guidelines, and training
  • Craft & Talent:
  • Show up as an experienced role model, setting a high craft bar for systems and visual design
  • Hone high quality work through detailed critique
  • Share your experience and excellence through leading by example in your design work, directly mentoring other designers, and creating and leveraging venues to share knowledge with the entire Design team
  • Be an expert liaison in the broader external design community, sharing and collecting knowledge about tools, practices, and emerging industry standards
  • Collaboration & Communication:
  • Work proactively as a trusted partner with Engineers, Product Designers, Content Designers, Brand Designers, Researchers, Product Managers, Program Managers, and leaders at all levels
  • Through relationships and observations, discover opportunities for design patterns across the company. Hold crucial conversations with teams to influence systems adoption
  • Bring enthusiasm, expertise, and clarity to all customer interactions as an influential ambassador for Design Systems across the company
  • Craft clear narratives that translate complex, technical subjects into compelling stories that executive leaders can support

Our take

Dropbox started by helping people bring together their files in one central place. The contents of these folders are synchronised to Dropbox's servers along with other computers and devices where the user has installed Dropbox, keeping the same files up-to-date across all devices.

Nowadays, there are lots of competing companies in cloud storage, and some with better distribution (e.g. Google and Apple). This explains why Dropbox is making a big push to reinvent itself after a fairly disappointing run since its IPO in 2018. The new Dropbox turns folders into "Spaces", which are collaboration hubs for teams, complete with comment streams, artificial intelligence tools and integrations into services such as Slack.

The company continues to build out its offerings through acquisitions, such as that of Formswift, bolstering its end-to-end agreement workflow capabilities. Indeed, It's very clear that Dropbox is trying to make a big move from being just a storage company. This seems to be a necessary move given the competitive nature of the industry it is operating within.

Company values

  • Be Worthy of Trust - Millions of teams trust us with their most important information. But this trust can vanish in an instant. That’s why integrity is the foundation of our culture. We do the right thing, even when nobody’s looking. And we’re honest—even when it’s uncomfortable
  • They win, We win - Our customers come first. So we put in the work to deeply understand them. We ask, “Who’s the customer?” and “What do they really need?” When they succeed, our business (and everything else) falls into place
  • Keep it Simple - Simple things work better—and make more sense. So we build products that do a few things really well. And we don’t overcomplicate life at Dropbox, whether it’s a plan or a process. Getting to simple isn’t always easy, but it’s worth the effort
  • Own it - We take responsibility for our work, from start to finish. When we get stuck, we unblock ourselves. When something goes wrong, we don’t ask, “What did they screw up?” but “What could I do better?” We learn from our mistakes and keep going—until we have real impact
  • Make work Human - Our mission is to design a more enlightened way of working, for Dropboxers and the world. So we make products that prioritize our needs as humans. And we build a compassionate culture where you can do your best work—no matter who you are or where you’re from
