Role

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or related fields and a minimum of 2 years of related experience
  • Experience/Exposure in ASIC design tape-outs
  • Exposure to high-speed digital design techniques
  • Experience in communication protocols (e.g. PCIe, UCIe)
  • Expertise with power-efficient digital design techniques

Desirable

  • Master's degree
  • Knowledge of processor design, accelerators, and/or memory hierarchies
  • Knowledge of machine learning algorithms
  • Strong communication skills and a track record of successful collaboration in cross-functional team environments
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills

What the job involves

  • We are hiring a Sr. Staff Digital Design Engineer to help lead ASIC development for the next-generation artificial intelligence computing architecture alongside a team of world-class scientists and engineers
  • If your passion is innovation, solving challenging technical problems, and doing impactful work, you should join our team and help build the world's first optical computers!
  • In this job, you will collaborate closely with computer architects, software engineers, verification engineers, and physical design engineers to scope out and design innovative compute-accelerators that work with photonic technology to power the growing AI/ML workloads customers want while keeping power low
  • In addition to playing a key role in active projects, this role will also involve leading various small sub-teams across multiple domains in mapping out next-generation forward-looking projects. This will be a great opportunity to define the next advance in computer architecture!
  • Implementation of RTL design according to architecture specifications for advanced ML/AI accelerator ASICs/SoCs including advanced memory system and high-performance NoC
  • Understand and integrate silicon photonic compute technology into digital accelerator design
  • Work closely with Design Verification and Analog teams to realize high performance, low power designs in advanced technology nodes
  • Manage RTL implementation to achieve functionally correct, performant designs within project schedules by identifying, communicating, and mitigating risks
  • Generate documentation for modules, including functionality and timing
  • Work closely with software teams on functionality, interfaces, and documentation
  • Perform RTL design audits such as LINT, CDC, RDC, etc

Our take

Neural networks and CPUs are vital to AI solutions, but manufacturers have largely failed to maintain innovation in recent years. Lightmatter solves this problem by offering a next-generation computing platform powered by photonics (light waves).

Lightmatter offers a forward-facing platform for AI-building that acts as an alternative to traditional solutions. It works by replacing wired CPUs with a combination of photonics and new algorithms. Lightmatter's solution is not only faster, but it is considerably more sustainable, and it has the potential to drive the next generation of AI development.

As of 2022, Lightmatter has raised $113 million across three funding rounds, which is testament to growing industry demand for faster, more effective AI-building solutions. Lightmatter currently has three products on the market - Envise, Passage, and Idiom - and is poised to take on the incumbent chiplet industry with a photonics-based alternative.
