Role

Who you are

  • Strong technical foundation with first-hand experience of what it’s like to develop software in a commercial setting
  • You may not have had “line management” responsibilities, but you should have experience in mentoring, guiding, and empowering engineers to support their career development
  • A sense of what needs to improve in a team and a track record of leading team initiatives that make things better
  • Prior experience of the engineering practices that get results – pairing, CI/CD, testing techniques
  • Organisational and planning ability, when you take on a goal – it gets done and your teammates can count on you
  • Dedication to staying current on best practices and evolving the team's technical processes

What the job involves

  • As an Engineering Manager in Experience Engineering, you'll be working on improving the developer experience, delivering reliable, fast and award-winning experiences in the area of content discovery and playback on devices.
  • Together with your department peers, have a vision for a high performing team. Help the team navigate where they are against that vision, and, through a series of initiatives, continuously improve
  • Hire engineers (and potentially other trades depending on team)
  • Together with your department peers, work out the right talent mix that results in a lean team with the skills and experience to succeed in their mission
  • Coach individual members along their career path, ensuring they give and get frequent and useful feedback and helping them get back on track when they don’t meet expectations
  • Line management duties that range from holiday approvals to supporting staff through personal issues
  • Be the technical voice of your team in wider forums, support engineers in making product improvements, and architecture discussions. Champion Software Engineering best practices, process improvements and advocate for optimal developer experience
  • Serve as the technical service owner, manage change and incidents, and optimise on-call processes where necessary
  • Contribute to technical planning, spot where technology choices need to be made and ensure the team have the time and space to manage technical debt and oversee the system architecture

Our take

Sky formed through the merger of Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting in 1990, making it the UK's largest pay-TV company. After the acquisition of Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland in 2014, Sky Group was formed, transforming the UK company into Europe's leading entertainment and media group.

With the recent success of their original content, Sky doubled their investment into this space by 2024 with a brand new movie and TV studio being built. This is expected to create an additional £3 billion of production investment in UK creative sector in the first five years alone.

Sky's streaming service, Now TV, was launched in 2012 to compete with the rising tide of Netflix and, more recently, with Amazon's Prime Video. With pay-TV subscriptions dropping and the video streaming industry expected to grow by a further 20% by 2027, Sky has remained competitive by offering a range of deals, partnering with Netflix, and developing its own TV - Sky Glass, as it aims to keep up with consumer trends.
