Who you are

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for an experienced and motivated technologist who possess a unique balance of industry knowledge, technical depth and strong interpersonal skills
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent
  • Experience communicating across technical and non-technical audiences and at C-level, including training, workshops, publications
  • Experience working in Financial Services organizations and implementing solutions in a regulated environment; driving technical and/or organizational change of significant complexity
  • Experience working as an architect, designing and implementing large-scale solutions in the Financial Services industry
  • Solid understanding of virtualization and/or cloud computing technologies

Desirable

  • Knowledge of distributed systems design and implementation or equivalent
  • Knowledge of presentations and whiteboarding skills with a high degree of comfort speaking with internal and external executives, IT management, and developers
  • Experience architecting, migrating, transforming or modernizing customer requirements to the cloud
  • A strong understanding of AWS or other large-scale cloud services providers, and cloud-based services and delivery modes (Iaas, PaaS, SaaS)
  • Deep experience with FSI-related applications, such as core insurance or banking systems, or big data architectures
  • The ability to deal with ambiguity and work in a virtual team environment
  • AWS certifications

What the job involves

  • As the AWS Financial Services Principal Solutions Architect, you will work with some of the world’s largest financial services companies, AWS Sales and several other AWS teams to craft highly scalable, flexible and resilient cloud architectures that address industry business problems and accelerate the adoption of AWS services
  • AWS Sales, Marketing, and Global Services (SMGS) is responsible for driving revenue, adoption, and growth from the largest and fastest growing small- and mid-market accounts to enterprise-level customers including public sector
  • Financial Services Solutions Architects are viewed as experts in their domain, and support customer engagements when those engagements require deep and authoritative industry expertise, and a keen understanding of architectural and technical requirements
  • Identifying patterns
  • Defining technical trends that can affect the industry
  • Publishing reference architectures
  • Building industry quickstarts and other development kits
  • Collecting technical best practices in the industry
  • Establish credibility in sales cycles for AWS services by collaborating with field sales teams and customers to help design and build solutions that help solve customers’ business problems
  • With the broader Financial Services team, develop technical elements of the strategic plan for accelerating adoption of AWS across the industry
  • You will be responsible for establishing technical credibility in the sales cycle (personally or with the broader technical team) by supporting discussions across our Financial Services customers and partners
  • Educate customers of all sizes on the value proposition of AWS within Financial Services, and participate in deep architectural discussions to ensure solutions are designed for successful deployment in the cloud
  • Capture and share best-practice knowledge amongst the AWS solutions architect community
  • Author or otherwise contribute to AWS customer-facing publications such as whitepapers
  • Build deep relationships with senior technical individuals within customers to enable them to be cloud advocates
  • Act as a technical liaison between customers, service engineering teams and support
  • Serve as a technical domain expert on deploying Financial Services industry workloads and applications on AWS
  • Architect solutions leveraging AWS technology, including solution development and potentially demonstrate technical feasibility through mechanisms including proof-of-concepts and/or prototypes
  • Travel may be required for this role, up to 25%

The company is present in numerous verticals, including cloud computing with Amazon Web Services, AI with its range of Alexa devices and a global marketplace more commonly referred to as 'the everything store'. Acquisitions include Ring, Twitch, Whole Foods Market, and IMDb.

More recently, Amazon has been focused on leading the "third wave in digital advertising". Many businesses are now shifting ad dollars to retailers, which before would have been spent with online media platforms. Amazon's seen great success in the space, with its revenue from advertising now higher than its Amazon Prime membership scheme, audiobooks and digital music combined. This growth is particularly impressive considering its digital ad rivals (like Snap, Alphabet, and Meta) have suffered declines due to wider macroeconomic factors and Apple's iOS privacy changes.

Despite its dominant market position, Amazon will continue to be challenged over the next decade, including sustaining AWS's cloud dominance in the face of Google and Microsoft. On top of this, the company's e-commerce division is facing profitability problems despite its 2023 post-IPO debt funding of 8 billion. It will need to find new ways to stay above their competitors.
