Our take

The world is facing a growing mental health crisis. In 2022, the US saw the proportion of the population with an acute anxiety, depression or other mental health need grow from 20% to 40%.

In 2021, Headspace and Ginger finalised a $3bn merger to form Headspace Health, an accessible mental health platform. It is determined to democratize mental healthcare, and its brands are already being used by over 100 million people and more than 4,000 enterprises including Starbucks, Adobe and Paramount.

There is clearly a need for virtual mental healthcare, and the market is growing increasingly crowded, with competitors including His & Hers Health. However, Headspace Health sets itself apart with its rapidly growing portfolio of services, added in part through strategic acquisitions such as that of AI health firm Sayana in 2022. It is now focusing on international expansion, offering its services directly to companies in the UK for the first time and planning to enter international markets over the course of 2023.
