Who you are

  • 6+ years professional experience, ideally in strategic business development, product management, and/or partnerships experience, with experience in signing new partners
  • Experience evaluating opportunities with regard to impact on strategy, brand, finance and operations
  • A compelling and inspired vision and sense of common purpose, with a willingness to look beyond what's possible today
  • Built successful relationships with external parties; worked with executives and senior leadership to explore new opportunities
  • Managed projects with multiple stakeholders; set clear milestones and hold people (and self) accountable to goals
  • A successful track record of managing complex deals and cross-functional projects
  • Experience building and managing relationships with senior business leaders, both internally and externally
  • Experience working cross-functionally with a range of teams, managing initiatives at scale and delivering on results

What the job involves

  • In this role, you will represent Square's brand in Canada and help develop and deploy our Canadian strategy
  • Responsibilities include scoping out potential partnerships, negotiating contracts, building and growing deep relationships with external parties
  • You will have plenty of experience evaluating market dynamics all while sourcing, scoping, negotiating, managing and growing partner relationships
  • You will be very comfortable interacting, presenting to, and persuading executives both internally and externally to help accomplish Square's long-term vision
  • Reporting into the Head of International Partnerships, you will be part of a team that is motivated and optimistic, that embraces change and sees learning opportunities in business challenges
  • Be responsible for the full partner lifecycle. You will source, sign, and manage partners end to end that will drive Square's growth in Canada
  • Take responsibility for our relationships with a broad set of partners that will include large strategic opportunities with major organisations (banks, telecommunication providers, trade associations, wholesalers and more), as well scaling our partner program for independent software and service providers, consultants and advisors
  • Be measured against a set of KPIs that will include growth of the partner ecosystem, the number and value of new customers acquired via your partners, and adoption of your partners’ solution by customers
  • Understand Square's company strategy inside and out and communicate the value of Square's brand and product ecosystem
  • Build deep relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to grow Square's relationships with strategic partners
  • Manage all aspects of the relationship with your partners: from initial scoping and negotiation; to prioritization and execution of strategic projects; financial assessment and forecasting; and ongoing partner management
  • Work with a broad range of internal global and local team members in Product, Engineering, Marketing, Sales, Customer Success, Account Management, and Legal

Our take

Block is a financial services technology company comprising of Square, Cash App, Spiral, TIDAL, and TBD. Its biggest brand, Square, offers hardware and software for small to medium-sized businesses enabling them to manage the entire payment lifecycle. It functions similarly to Shopify and Stripe, but has paired online payment processing with physical devices such as registers, payment terminals, and mobile card readers.

The business was originally founded as Square in 2009 by Jack Dorsey of Twitter fame. Already well-established with SMEs all over the globe, Square has significantly benefited from the increased demand for mobile payment systems. Its order management feature remains a go-to tool for small businesses that otherwise didn't have the proper infrastructure in place when demand for home delivery surged.

Square rebranded as Block in December 2021, with the Square brand name remaining in place for their seller business. The company has since come under fire for its security practices, facing lawsuits in relation to a major breach of CashApp user data, and in 2024 announced plans to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs. Despite these setbacks, there is every chance the business will move past this, though it may take some time to rebuild trust in its product.
