Company mission

Cloudflare's mission is to help build a better Internet that is bold and ambitious.

Role

Who you are

  • 3-5 years of prior Technical Sales, Computer Engineering, or related experience
  • Solid technical understanding of Computer Architecture, JavaScript, and other key elements of our platform
  • Computer Architecture; including a contextual understanding of its history and development. Clear understanding of the advantages to our Isolate technology vs Containers or VMs; and the differences between all three
  • Javascript; both practical (what can I build in it; what features should I use?) and comparative (how is it different from Python or C++?) perspective. Able to clearly articulate the differences between our runtime and Node.js or other common options
  • Other programming languages - knowledge and experience of other common languages is preferred. Python and Rust are especially helpful
  • Database technologies. Purpose of a database in systems architectures; advantages of distributed vs centralized models. Able to pick the right technology for a use case based on consistency models, latency scaling methods, etc
  • AI; High level understanding of trending AI use cases and their architectures; understanding of relevant players in the market and how they differ
  • Knowledge and experience of Systems Design
  • You’ve built a web application, either professionally or as a hobbyist, and will be able to explain your design choices clearly during the interview process
  • Able to hear a clear, non-technical description of an Application (“It is a chat room, for our 150 most important users”) and quickly determine which Compute, Data, and Security components are needed to build this application
  • Technical curiosity and passion: Cloudflare is at the cutting edge of internet technology, and our SSEs are viewed as subject-matter experts. It’s incumbent on us to stay up to date not only with Cloudflare’s specific products, but with industry trends
  • Ability to manage a project, work to deadlines, and prioritize between competing goals
  • Willingness to travel up to 40%

What the job involves

  • As a critical member of our Specialist Team, you will serve as a trusted technical advisor; helping clients find the best solution for their business needs via Cloudflare Developer Platform
  • Guide qualified prospects through the Solution Design; showing them the key capabilities of the Cloudflare Developer Platform
  • Drive Proof of Concept stages of the sales cycle with hands-on engagement, debugging capabilities and consistent internal and external communication
  • Work with your Sales Partners to consistently achieve Pipeline and Revenue goals
  • Take clients’ requirement, design the optimized Cloudflare Developer Platform solution for those requirements, and clearly communicate the benefits vs competing solutions, potential challenges and possible migration paths
  • Support technical discussions on the Developer Platform, to ensure sound design and overcome objections. Understand, from a rigorous Computer Architecture perspective, the design of our system and communicate this to clients with varying levels of knowledge
  • Support go-to-market efforts through public speaking, hackathon, user group and conference attendances

Our take

Cloudflare is a multi-service global network that provides web security and infrastructure, DDoS mitigation services, and a content delivery network. Founded in 2009, Cloudflare has risen to become an industry giant, with around 25 million global internet properties on its network.

Cloudflare has been responsible for a number of admirable initiatives, offering free web protection to human rights groups, journalists, artists, and US election websites. This goes some way to counteracting the flak Cloudflare has received in some circles for the controversial groups and users who use its services. This chequered history, however, has not affected its over 80% market share in the content delivery network field.

This is perhaps in part because it has proven sharp at staying abreast of the rapidly morphing tech and digital space and customer demands. For example, Cloudflare is shifting to 100% renewable energy usage to create a zero-emissions internet, and in 2020 released a feature that would help users navigate data privacy regulations by selecting where their data is stored.

The cloud infrastructure market reached $53 billion in 2022. While the Big 3 (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) own 65% of the market, that still leaves billions of dollars left for companies such as Cloudflare. Its ambitious and successful work is likely to continue being a crucial feature of the web, but in 2023, placed it in the crosshairs of hackers looking to exploit its infrastructure. The beginning of 2024 saw Cloudflare vow to bolster its security and patch vulnerabilities.
