Role

Who you are

  • We welcome applications from current students at any level (Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate) who have completed (by the time of your internship) at least two years of university-level study in a technical subject (computer science, engineering, maths, physics, etc.)
  • We also look for those who have experience with any of C++, Python, Java and JavaScript
  • If you are passionate about backend infrastructure, user interface development, distributed programming, programming languages, TensorFlow, Autodiff, ML frameworks, data visualisation/analysis or production systems this is a great opportunity for you!

What the job involves

  • As a Software Engineering Intern at DeepMind, you will work on a specific project critical to DeepMind’s needs
  • You might work on a team to develop and integrate applications to help accelerate scientific research
  • These range from small utilities, through data ingestion and visualisation tools, to running large scale simulations in our data centres
  • You might also work in a team which builds the tools and infrastructure that enable AI research at scale
  • This team creates the internal tools that empower researchers to experiment and prototype effortlessly, organise & interpret experiment outputs with ease, and collaborate on research at scale
  • As an intern on this team you may work on prototyping new tools, building new features, or shipping production systems to our research team
  • Parallelise scientific computations to scale across Google’s data centers
  • Optimise software to take advantage of internal-only hardware architectures
  • Create a full stack system (frontend / backend) to track DeepMind’s internal technologies
  • Build an API to make it easier to launch automated ML experiments
  • Add new features to the TensorFlow or JAX languages
  • Design and implement a system to automatically aggregate useful statistics on top of ‘big data’ generated by ML experiments
  • Automatically evaluate changes to ML model performance against a series of baselines

Our take

Google DeepMind combines the talents of two leading AI labs, Google Brain and DeepMind. Over the past decade, they have made major breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, which have helped shape the AI industry today.

DeepMind first gained attention with its deep reinforcement learning techniques, especially with the program DQN, which learned to play 49 Atari games just by watching the screen. Its landmark achievement came with AlphaGo, the first AI to beat a world champion in the complex game of Go. Following this success, it tackled even tougher challenges, such as creating AlphaStar, which defeated professional players in StarCraft II, and AlphaFold, which predicts protein structures to advance medical research.

Now operating as Google DeepMind, the organisation uses its computing resources to solve important scientific and engineering problems. Focused on developing AI responsibly, ensuring that its groundbreaking products benefit everyone, With ongoing innovations in areas like generative models and robotics, Google DeepMind is set to lead the next wave of AI advancements while addressing the ethical challenges that come with these technologies.
