Company mission

Make an easy, open source way for everyone in your company to ask questions and learn from data.

Role

Who you are

  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Strong product sensibilities - you can critically navigate product proposal docs and Figma designs and translate them to engineering requirements that span the Metabase product stack, and identify and mitigate risks to building them
  • Skills in building processes and teams that enable product explorations and prototyping in a way that leads to shippable products
  • Strong project management skills. You enjoy continually tweaking and improving processes
  • A track record as an engineer of shipping non-trivial full-stack product changes to products touching on a React + Redux stack or equivalent with changes to a backend API
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience, or equivalent (you can demonstrate skill at key aspects of building and improving an engineering team, and supporting and developing people's careers)
  • You've built software or managed teams in a product engineering capacity in cross-functional environments with product, design, foundations or platform engineering, and customer success and can effectively balance execution of defined projects with prototyping, iteration, and learning in other projects

What the job involves

  • Support and drive high velocity product iteration on the core Metabase product
  • Work closely with Product, Customer Success, and Tech Leads to appropriately plan and scope engineering projects that execute on the product roadmap for the core product, balancing feature development, tech debt and acceleration projects, and bug fixes
  • Manage execution of much of the core product roadmap while balancing weekly interrupts of escalations or reaction to changes in the environment (such as security issues, customer escalations, etc)
  • Find, attract, hire, onboard, and nurture top-level engineering IC talent. Build a culture of continuous improvement
  • Remove obstacles, coach individuals, tune processes, and optimize the environment to continuously increase the speed of iteration

Otta's take

Sam Franklin headshot

Sam Franklin

CEO of Otta

Metabase is at the crest of a third wave of Business Intelligence tools: first centralized enterprise architectures like SAP, then self-service tools like Tableau and Looker and now cloud-based, open-source tools like Metabase.

Its open-source nature has helped Metabase reach 98 million downloads. Metabase makes money by offering a number of professional services like managed hosting, support, and assistance with implementing Metabase in a custom analytics or business intelligence setup.

The company is doubling down on its documentation and sales team to help onboard less experienced users and scale beyond their current user base of over 30,000 companies. The challenge for the startup will be capturing significant revenue while sticking to their open-source principles.
